Greetings, one and all. This week's installment of TQWD features and up-and-coming member of the TMF and artist, Winner of the 2006 Golden Feather Award for Best Original Artist...
Snail Shell!
***********************************
1) You were recently voted Best Original Artist in the TMF's Golden Feather Awards. How will this affect your artwork in the future, if at all? I know from personal experience that you can go through a period of pressure, trying to top yourself. What does the future look like for you right now, artistically speaking?
I was THRILLED over the result of the GFA’s this year. There is certainly that desire to try top everything that I accomplished in 2006, however I’m back in school and that’s got my drawing time tied up for the most part. On the plus side, part of my program is an actual art course, so when I get out and I do have the time for more recreational stuff, there should be some kind of improvement. Basically, they’re teaching me how to draw like an artist and not like a snail. lol
2) Speaking of artwork, what are the things that most influence you, the things that you see showing up in your own works?
Good characters. If what I’m watching/listening to/reading doesn’t have entertaining, lively or fun characters, I can’t get into it. An example would be the TV show House. I find the show formulatic and predictable, but the character House is a total stitch.
Other than that, I’m a fan of bright colours. I see a character with a bright, colourful costume, I’m like, “Ooooo, shiny...” lol
3) And one final question about art...how much of your work is self-indulgent and how much is driven by your fanbase?
When I get a really good idea of my own, I try to get it out of my system as soon as I can, but I get a new request every other week or so. I try to get them all in, but some get lost, some subjects are not allowed on the forum and some I’ve never even heard of. I’m very grateful for my fanbase and I try my best to please everyone.
4) Ok, moving on. How do you approach your fetish in real life? How does it all play out for Snail Shell?
It doesn’t. lol I don’t get tickled very much. I don’t get to tickle very much. I am very much still learning how to be a good ler/lee. My first gathering was NEST 06. I’ve been to a Michigan party and organized a munch here in Toronto. I’ll be at NEST again this year. As far as tickling on a day to day basis, it really doesn’t happen for this kid. lol
5) If you could have any single superhuman ability, what would it be?
Funny you should ask. I’m actually Batman. lol
Just one huh? If I could remain anonymous, I think John Coffey’s powers from The Green Mile were pretty cool. Uncanny knowledge of what needs to be done and the power to fix it.
6) Tell us about your life outside of tickling. What sort of things do you do with your spare time that do not relate to any fetishes?
I’m back at school now for video game design, so that’s taking up most of my time. Outside of that, I eat, sleep, work at the Beer Store and go to the gym where I lift weights and do drills for Mixed Martial Arts (from which I’m thankful retired). I love going for walks. I listen to just about any kind of music outside of rap, pop or country. If the mood strikes, I head for one of Toronto’s many sports bars to catch the hockey game or the UFC cards. Still single. I’m a huge fan of animation and movies and try to get out to the cinema whenever I can.
Oh yeah. And I draw. lol
7) If you had the means to keep one "exotic" pet, what would it be?
I have a huge respect for animals and I know that for most exotic pets, you have to be really careful. Honestly, I’ve always been a cat person. Pretty boring for this interview, but really, I wouldn’t go much further than that.
8) What was the last great film you've seen and why did it stick with you?
Grind House blew me away. Cinema storytelling at it’s best and done with total homage to the source material and rounded out with Rodriguez’ and Tarantino’s offbeat sense of humour. It was a movie for people who love movies as an art form as well as for their entertainment value.
9) I thought I'd slip in one more art-related question toward the end here. This is a strange one, but what the hell. If you could "cross the realities" and have a tickling session with one drawn character, who would it be and why?
A hairless Pikachu, because IrishGirl said so. lol
It’s not something I think about actually. I mean, I realize that there are those who visualize themselves in my drawings and who doesn’t love seeing the legendary April O’Neal foot tickling scene, right? A ‘me’ session with a fictional character isn’t something I think about.
Some of my favourite characters for tk subjects include Psylocke from X-Men, Freefall from Gen-13 and pretty much any of the girls from the Street Fighter series
10) And, the now famous Question Number Ten: If you could invite any three people from any point in history to dinner, who would they be and why?
Adam Warren (comic book writer/artist), Stephen Colbert (fake news anchor, The Colbert Report)and Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Mario, Donkey Kong and most other Nintendo trademark characters). Fanboy, geeky, hero worship aside, any interview I’ve seen/read with these guys, they always have this great sense of humour, strong imagination and generally act like a big kid, much like I’ve been described. Really I just think I’d be a fun conversation.

My sincere thanks to Snail Shell for taking the time to sit down and chat with us for a few minutes. It was a real pleasure.
