That flushing sound you hear...

Is another example of taxpayer money going to idiots, slackers and ne'er-do-wells. I won't be at all surprised if this moron is broke in a year or two, and still on the dole.

And yes, people who really do need help should get it.

A very high percentage of the people who win the lottery end up filing bankruptcy (I can't remember exactly what the figure is, but I think it's between 60%-65%). As far as receiving $200/mo. as public assistance, that is not going to help her at all with already owning 2 houses. $200/mo. without hitting the lottery and without owning 2 houses is not much to live on anyways.

But that is her problem now because that is a choice she has made. The State of Michigan now needs to cut her off because she is no longer destitute or lives below the federal poverty guidelines.

Unfortunately, eligibility for welfare is based on an income. Lottery winnings is not an income.

I think in cases like this, the state should do is offer ways to teach the person how to manage and invest their money so they don't end up bankrupt like so many lottery winners end up. That way they can get off of welfare.

Amen to that, Nemesis.

Lottery payouts aren't usually lump sums AFAIK, they're paid as instalments. They there's the issue of taxes. What this woman ends up with may be a lot less than advertised.

But seriously, why aren't folks on the dole ever given serious help finding gainful employment rather than just a bus pass and a mandate to look for work (not necessarily job training per se, but help with what's actually the hardest public relations gig anyone will ever have, convincing an employer to hire you)? Some folks cannot be helped for the time being for whatever reason, but I'll betcha that a serious job-coaching program (and not just a thinly-disguised method of cutting peoples' benefits off) would definitely deliver results.

Then again, less people on welfare means fewer jobs for the paper-pushers who run that system.

And if that paper wants to get taxpayers *really* riled up, they should publish lists of corporations, bankers, etc. who routinely dole out campaign funds to many members of congress in order to get things moved their way. They should publish the names of those congresscreatures and how much they got and from whom. It should prove highly enligtening!

It's the attitude that grinds my gears. I know she took the lump sum option and came out with 6 or 700 hundred thousand if memory serves. But she feels entitled to $200 a month because she has no income? Sorry, that just won't wash with me. Nothing I can do of course, so I guess it doesn't matter.

I wish that I thought such scamming the system were unusual. 🙁
