Mrs. Hale, aged 90, was on the witness stand being cross-examined by the district attorney. The charge against her was second-degree murder and she had already explained in direct testimony that she had shot the man in self defense.
"How can you call it self-defense," said the DA, "when all of the bullet holes were in his back? Surely he was no threat to you running away from you."
"After he stole my purse," said Mrs. Hale, "it's true that he was running away with it. But I was afraid he would come back, bash me over the head, and take my wedding band, too."
"But why did you shoot him six times?" asked the DA.
The sweet little old lady and smiled and said "Because when I pulled the trigger the seventh time, the pistol only clicked."
