Alice, age ten, was very upset when she came to breakfast one morning.

"I had a terrible nightmare," she told her mother and father. "An angel wearing a dark mask and holding a scythe
told me that grandma is going to die today."

"My mother is in the hospital, dying of lung cancer," said her father, sadly, "and she probably won't last until
next month, and we have told you all this, so that explains your dream. But it won't necessarily happen today."

Nevertheless, none of them was surprised when a call from the hospital came at 8pm that night with news of the old
woman's death.

One month later, Alice was again upset at breakfast.

"I had another nightmare like the one when grandma died," she said. "This time the same angel told me that Aunt Marie
will die today."

"Are you sure the angel said 'Aunt Marie' and not 'Aunt Mary'?" asked her father. "My sister Marie is only 42 and in
excellent halth. But your mother's Aunt Mary, who is really your great aunt, is almost 80 and hasn't been well for the
last few years."

"I'm sure!" said Alice. "The angel said 'Aunt Marie.' We have to call her and warn her to be very careful today."

"No," said her father. "I'm not going to upset Marie because you had a dream."

Alice was not surprised, but her parents were shocked, when a phone call came that night at 9pm from Marie's husband,
Sid, saying that she had been killed in an accident on the San Diego Freeway driving home from work.

Alice refrained from saying "I told you so," but she could tell that her parents were severely shaken by the fact that
the prediction came true.

One month later, Alice was hysterical at breakfast time and ran to her father, hugging him. After calming hr down,
she managed to say, between sobs, "Oh, Daddy. This time that same angel said that you would die today!"

"Are you sure?" asked her father, really shaken this time. "Exactly what did the angel say?"

"His exact words were, 'Today your father will die at 1pm.' That's all he said."

"I'm not going to work today," said her father. "And neither is your mother, and you're not going to school. We
are all going to stay home until 1pm has safely passed."

The three of them sat in the living room, not speakig much, and hugging a lot, all morning long and until the clock
on the fireplace struck 1pm.

"Thank God," said Alice's father, "I made it. I made it!"

For a few minutes they all hugged each other and cried for happiness.

It was then that they heard a siren. They saw an ambulance go by and stop at the house next door.

"Maybe that angel of death in your dream was one house off," said Alice's father.

They all went outside and saw two paramedics trying to revive Joey Peano, their letter carrier. Joey had been the
letter carrier on that route since they had moved in, a dozen years ago. Joey's body, still handsome even in death,
was lying on the grass outside the house next door.

"No hope," said one paramedic to the other. "He was dead when he hit the ground."

"Massive cerebral hemorrhage," said the second paramedic. "A real shame, he only looks about 35. We'll take him to
the morgue. I'll put down the time of death as 1pm."
