Mecca Cola's red and white label, its fizz and dark, sweet taste make it startlingly similar to Coke. But Mecca Cola is far from the Real Thing.

It is, said its creator, a "rejection of American politics, imperialism and hegemony and a protest against the Zionist crime financed and supported by America".

Two million bottles have been sold since it was launched two months ago in France and orders are pouring in from around the world.

"I got faxes last night from China and Australia and we've got many deals in North Africa," said Tawfik Mathlouthi, a French radio journalist who founded the Mecca Cola company. "People are thirsty for a way to stand up to American hypocrisy."

In the heavily Muslim northern districts of Paris Mecca Cola is sold for £1.05 per 1.5 litre bottle, about the same as Coke. It is gradually penetrating the mainstream supermarkets. M Mathlouthi has orders for 11 million bottles and is building his own manufacturing and bottling plant near Paris.

"I had the idea in the shower one day," he said. "What is the point in complaining about America all the time if you then go out and help its economy by buying American products? I felt it was time to give people a choice not to buy American goods and cola is a symbol of American economic power."

Other firms in the Middle East have tried creating different cola drinks, he said, notably Iran's Zam Zam Cola. But none has turned its drink into a political weapon.

"Mecca Cola is not just a drink," said M Mathlouthi. "It is an act of protest against Bush and Rumsfeld and their policies."

M Mathlouthi, 46, was born in Tunisia but moved to France in 1977 and is now a French citizen. He qualified as a lawyer but made his name as a broadcaster on Radio Mediterranee, based in Paris.

Once he thought of creating an alternative cola, he worked with scientists for months to ensure the taste was decent before going into production.

He has sunk £100,000 of his own money into the project and expects to make a profit by the middle of this year. He has promised to give away 20 per cent of Mecca Cola's profits, half to support Palestinian children and half to other charitable organisations.

He said he would keep a careful eye on the money to ensure that none of it went to armed combatants. M Mathlouthi hopes to benefit from boycotts of American brands in many Arab countries. McDonald's, Coca-Cola and Kentucky Fried Chicken have all suffered.

In the spring, he plans to become the Muslim Colonel Sanders with a chain called HFC - Halal Fried Chicken.

Sounds like the companies in the US are pissed off because they might not make as much money as they used to. I think this is a great idea.

"In the spring, he plans to become the Muslim Colonel Sanders with a chain called HFC - Halal Fried Chicken."

Is he serious about that?😀

Coke is the Real Thing

Interesting facts there Biggles, I had not heard this before. Thanks for posting🙂 Diet Coke is my choice of soft drink, I can't stand Pepsi Yuck! Tooooiiiiiiiieeeeee phubbbssstt!
:idontwann :blaugh: :blaugh:

I now have two reasons to drink Coke (Diet Coke these days, that is). (1) I like it, and (2) to show support for American products against Mecca Cola.

Oh for goodess sake... hasn't everyone taken this thing just a little bit too seriously? I mean shit, the worst that'll happen is these US companies won't make as big a filthy amount of money as they did before. Oh my heart bleeds...

Looks..

like a marketing coup to me, nearly as good/bad as AOL convincing people they connect them to the internet in some fashion that is "better" than other services...lol. These guys will make a mint, and I'm sure they'll be donating the %'s they say they will...pretty sure...well, actually, not real sure.
As for your bleeding heart Lynchy, save a bit of sympathy for those who will be laid off/fired due to less production and closed factories/plants/offices. There's a law of physics that covers this regarding actions and reactions and it holds true financially as well.

🙂 Q, I knew that I liked you from the beginning! Encore! Well spoken from a real man!😉
You made some great points here! 🙂

Whatever. I just hope the money won't fund Hamas or something. As for M Mathlouthi, what's next after this and HFC, Mecca-Donald's? 😛

This makes me think about the computer companies sueing Microsoft because they are monopolizing. I laugh out loud at them. I say: If microsoft is good enough to invent all those things by itself and you can't, then get a life or try harder instead of sueing them.

Now back to the point. Well, I don't mind people bringing new things on the market, but using othe brands ( saying they suck, ours is better ) is just lame. Look, my soda was made just like theirs, but it's not american, it's not a product of their capitalistic factories, love me please. If you can't bring your products to the top spot without referring to another product or giving a negative image to another product, then don't start. Cuz' thats the best way to make enemies. And an enemy is for life, remember that...

Hehehe! This stuff could well taste like pig dung, and the French would still buy it, so long as it's being marketed as "Anti-American." 😀 Nice to see that France's national superiority complex is being used to fleece them.

Mecca Cola might want to think about moving their factory to a more stable region, though, seeing as France still officially surrenders any time three or more German tourists arrive on the same plane... 🙄

I think there is an ideal asutickler lets market a cola made out of pig dung and turpentine and make it sound even more anti-american than this mecca cola. We could make millions and enjoy seeing the French guzzle the stuff down.

Heck, yeah! We could call it "Sissy Cola," and say that the pungent flavor was representative of "France's resistance to American Imperialism..."

I say we have a big, green frog as our beverage's official logo... 😛 😀

OMG OMG OMG!!! Whooooooooeeeeeeee.... as my roommate (and undoubtedly, my upstairs neighbors as well) can attest, it's taken me about 15 minutes or so to compose myself enough (and wipe the tears away enough to see) to reply to this. My GOD, I haven't laughed like this in SOOOOOOOOOOOOO long! You know, that kind of breathless, hysterical, wonderful, euphoric laughter that you just can't stop and wish they'd find a way to bottle? Whew! Thanks for the best laugh I've had in too long!:jester: :blaugh:

And the perfect irony would be if this stuff were to taste just like Coke. Of course, who drinks that stuff anyhow? Everyone knows that DR PEPPER is the one true nectar of the tickle-gods.😛

For more fun. You, I, and AffectionateDan could put on some lederhosen and fly over there and take over the whole country. We could have all the snails we could eat and watch lots of Jerry Lewis mov....nah we best forget it.😀

We wouldn't have to KEEP the place, or anything... but when Jacques Chirac showed up to throw down his sword, we COULD make him drink a Coke and sing "America the Beautiful"...

On the other side of the Evil American Coin, Boss....some rich American will probably buy the company in about 3 years and make a mint off it for himself! 😛

How silly an idea. All those sour grapes the US bashers must be grasping for must have finally bonked some of 'em on their collective heads!

🙄
Joby

I wonder... what are the chances that this company is secretly owned by coke (or some other US soft drink manufacturer). They use this guy as a front man, market their cola product (which they already produce under the name Coke, or Pepsi, or RC or any of a number of other corporations). If they did this, they'd have a huge market share already in place. :wow:

The only reason I would consider this is that the main concern of a corporation is profit. They could be smiling all the way to the bank!

Personally, I like the idea of an American corporation making money from the very people who claim to hate them and us just on principal. Of course, I could just be way too cynical for my own good. 😛
