This is just the same as what they did with Teen Titans. For those of you that know better, Teen Titans is a DC comic of the same name. The new Teen Titans, the ones we're more fimiliar with, are almost nothing like the originals.
I saw this Looney Toons thing on the 10' O clock news. I don't think this is necessary, but I do agree, in part, with some of the things that were said in that article. What children think is funny isn't the same anymore. With a heavier influence coming from japanimation, more western cartoons are taking a dive and selling out. I don't agree with it, because we have enough anime as it is, and we need to maintain the cutlural values and integrities of our shows and cartoons, but theres nothing we can do about this. The children are already hooked on this changing, more modern trend (the Power Puff Girls are an example of the slow, seemingly innocent and cute metamorphasis of this insidious take-over).
From what the article says, this takes place in the future and isn't meant to overshadow, overthrow, or destroy the personas, personalities, mannerisms, appearances and pleasant memories of these original Looney Tunes characters. Its meant to be taken as an addition to the series. Looney Tunes will always be popular for what it was and is. It still sells and the authenticity of the characters or the value of the merchandize they are plastered on will not go down in the foreseeable future.
I agree, these looks are pretty extreme and completely ridiculous, no matter how far into the future it is. I won't be watching the show as I'm not into cartoons anymore (with some clear exceptions- Simpsons, Family Guy, etc.), and no matter how sharp, hip or new these old characters look, its not enough to peak my interest.
The new Teen Titans isn't so bad (could be better, but isn't so bad from the several episodes I've seen) and the original had a good run and is still marketable and untouched just for the sake of the purists. In the same way, I think we should at least give this newer Toon show a chance and see what comes of it.
Looney Tunes is a trademark and cartoon show that will be around indefinitely. Its had a good run, its still available, and fans will have the memories always. Its left it's mark on western society and the world and nothing will ever change the impact it has made.
But times change and people want to try different things. If someone wants to make a different show based however closely or loosely on these characters, they have that right even if we don't agree with it (which I personally don't).
Its just telling a story a different way. This isn't the first series to be redone, and it won't be the last. I don't agree with it, but I'm not so stubborn that I won't let others enjoy it, if for some reason they do.
We'll always have the originals, and we'll always have the choice of remembering them and smiling, and simply ignoring what comes next.
