Let's see... we have:
Football
The New York Giants.....play in New Jersey
The New York Jets.......play in New Jersey(in "Giants Stadium"!)
Buffalo Bills...........Buffalo, NY. One of the only TWO professional teams that literally play in NY State and not on an island or a borough of...but are still almost all but ignored as a NY team!
They weren't even given their OWN stadiuim!
Baseball
New York Yankees....Da Bronx...a Borough of New York
New York Mets.......Queens....another Borough
Neither of which touch the Mainland of the United States let alone New York State. However, they are indeed IN or part of what is known now as New York. Imagine if the preceeding name, New Amsterdam, was never changed?
They would all be called: The New AmsterDAM Yankees
New AmsterDAM Giants, the New AmsterDAM Mets.
Hockey
New York Rangers....New York City, NY.
Buffalo Sabers.....Buffalo, NY...the only other pro team that actually plays in NY State itself.
New York Islanders.....Long Island, NY. Like Staten Island...kinda like they're not really part of NY being two more islands like Manhattan. Manhattan Island aka New York City.
Basketball
New York Knicks....New York City, NY
The New Jersey Nets...formally of Long Island, New York, the ONLY team that moved from New York to New Jersey and changed its' Name to suit the move.
It's not the New Jersey Giants and it's not the New Jersey Jets.
I don't follow Soccer at all and have little Idea what the teams that play in the area are called.
I do recall the Cosmos...played in Giants stadium, (New Jersey) but I think they were called the NY Cosmos and not the NJ Cosmos but I could be wrong there.
Ahhhhh New York....when anyone and everyone says " I'm going to New York, the mean only ONE thing.... New York City. Unless specified otherwise, even when talked about...New York meant/means New York City. Some just refer to it as "The City".
The Bronx, attached to NYC aka Manhattan Island could be thought of as the same. By that standard of thinking, the only NY teams would be The New York Yankees and the New York Rangers.
