The Pakistan and India situation....

We've been hearing a lot on the news lately about tensions between India and Pakistan. It's a tough situation that won't be resolved overnight...if ever. But, all this talk about nuclear war is nuts! They'd have to be crazy! It's just going to come back to haunt them if they do that.

I have friends with family in India...and know a Franciscan missionary who serves there. I'd hate to see anything happen to them. But, my concern goes beyond them to the millions of innocent victims who suffer because of political BS. Better to give up a small piece of land than have everything blown to hell!

The Big Bomb

It seems to me that Pakistan and India are rivals in much the same sense that the United States and USSR were during the cold war. Both are recent nuclear powers and both are scrambling to keep one step ahead of the other militarily. Pakistan, like the USSR, has a rather unstable government, so it would seem to me that the dictator (i know how to say it but not how to spell it) is in a precarious position--he must cater to the demands of the United States' anti-terrorist policy while still making his people believe he has not sold Pakistan out to the West--or even worse--to India. It would seem that his best recourse is to make very loud noise about war with India so as to prove his resolve to his people. In reality, I don't think it will come to nuclear war--as that would mean the certain destruction of Pakistan. However, I suppose given the events of the past year, one should not assume that anyone is as rational as we would believe them to be--but still I doubt it--and I fervently hope against it as well.

i gotta disagree greg

with the usa, and the ussr it was political.
with india, and pakistan the problem is religion!
that makes it much worse.
