On this day in 1927 Charles Lindbergh lands his plane, Spirit of St. Louis in Paris, becoming the first man to make a solo, non-stop flight from America to Europe. Lindbergh became a controversial character due to his isolationist stance leading up to WWII, but the importance of his flight and the courage it took can't be denied.

The History Channel didn't mention this.

This was a major milestone for world aviation.

Yes, the solo flight across the Atlantic was a major milestone in aviation, perhaps the biggest in the 20th century until the moon flights in the 1960's.

He did not become contrroversial because he was an isolationist. There were many isolationists in Congress and in the Senate who didn't become figures of controversy later.

Charles Lindbergh became controversial because he accepted the Service Cross of the German Eagle (Verdienstorden vom Deutschen Adler) from Adolph Hitler in 1938. (Below is a photo of that award.)

According to Wikipedia, Mr. Lindbergh "...warned of the Jewish people's "large ownership and influence in our motion pictures, our press, our radio and our government". Sound familiar?

He accomplished a great feat, true, on a par with Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon. But what a sordid character.
