Mia grabbed her backpack as the instructor dismissed the evening class. She shuffled out with the other students into the hallway and fumbled through her purse to find her iPod. A group of her classmates were huddled nearby, exchanging phone numbers when one of them, a girl as young as she was, tapped her on the shoulder.
“Hi there.” She said, her voice was cheery and her smile was innocent.
“Hi…” Mia replied hesitantly as she continued to search her purse.
“Im Brianna, we’ve had class all semester together. Not saying you didn’t know that haha, but um anyway, since finals just ended and summer is coming up, we’re all exchanging numbers and going to my house for pizza and some movies.” The young girl spoke with the enthusiasm and glee that only the young are able to pull off.
“Um…that’s cool.” Mia gave her an odd smile.
“Yeah! Sooo….did you wanna come?” She made an awkward gesture with her shoulders.
Mia hesitated for moment and looked away as she pulled the iPod out.
“I’ve actually got plans...” Mia lied as she began to put the ear buds in and walk away.
Brianna waved and said something, but Mia had drowned it out with music as she exited the college. She felt bad for lying, but new people and parties made her nervous. She was a bit shy, and being around people she didn’t know made her uncomfortable.
Mia had just turned twenty a couple months back. She took care of her body and maintained a healthy figure. Her hair was a natural black that rested on her shoulders. Her light green eyes stood out from her clean, tan skin. As she walked along the sidewalk she noticed someone leaning up against a wall toward the end of the block. As she got closer, she forced her vision down. Once she had passed the figure she waited a few moments and then she turned her body to look behind her. Whoever was there was gone now. She looked forward again, but would occasionally check back as she kept walking.
She arrived at home moments later. Her living conditions were much like her school habits in terms of solitude. She lived at the end of a court, and being fairly new houses, she was the only resident in the area at the moment.
She set the bottle of water she had been carrying on the counter and checked her house phone for messages. Two advertisements and one poll for the governor’s re-election… She deleted them and sighed.
Walking into the bedroom, she dropped her backpack on
the bed and sat down at a desk, turning on her laptop. She had no idea why she checked her Facebook every night, she hardly knew anyone aside from some distant family relatives who frequently asked her how she was. She made a post about being glad that the semester was over and then logged off.
After some time of browsing the internet, Mia decided to call it a night. She grabbed her bottle of water from the kitchen and changed into a short sleeve shirt and pajama pants. As she took a swig of water, she remembered to lock her front door. As she headed back to her bedroom, her head swam and the room began to spin. Her legs grew heavy and a wave of exhaustion crashed down on her. She stumbled to her room and made it to the bed just before everything went black.
Eventually she opened her eyes, staring at the ceiling as it slowly came into focus. She tried to rub her eyes, but found her arms couldn’t move. A length of white rope bound her wrists above her head and secured her to the headboard. Her ankles were also tied together, but she was able to move her legs. The lights were dimmed enough that Mia could only see the silhouettes of her furniture.
She struggled to free herself, but the ropes wouldn’t loosen.
“Someone help me!” Mia yelled out, still fighting to escape.
“I’m sure that you know as well as I do that your voice won’t carry far enough.” The voice of a man came from the doorway.
“Let me go!” She struggled even more.
“I imagine Id have a similar reaction, were I in your position, but if you’ll allow me to explain ...” The man moved forward into the room.
“Please…don’t hurt me. I haven’t seen your face, so just take what you want and leave me alone.” She managed, as she began to shake.
“Alone?” the man replied, amusement in his voice.
“I’m begging you, please, don’t do this…” Tears came to her eyes and fell.
She felt a soft cloth gently touch her cheeks, as the man attempted to wipe away her tears. She flinched away and forced her eyes shut.
“You don’t need to be afraid of me. I have no desire to cause you pain or discomfort.” The man’s voice was calm and hinted that he was fairly young.
“Just please don’t…Leave me alone…” She fought back more tears.
“You’ve been alone for quite a while now. It’s obvious that you aren’t happy.” The man sat down on the edge of the bed. His face remained hidden from the dim light.
“What do you want…?” Mia asked as she began to shake again.
“To help you…” The calmness in his voice made him seem almost friendly as his right hand touched her chin and moved down to rest on her side.
“Wha-what are you doing” The fear was replaced with anxiety.
The middle and index fingers on his left hand touched her wrist just below the ropes and lightly traced an “s” down her arm as he spoke.
“There is a simple cure…for sadness and misery. The remedy is laughter, and now it will set you free…”
His fingertips began to lightly spider through her shirt over her ribs and inside the tender skin under her arm.
“Ahahahahheheheheheh, wait hahahahahha, not thathahahahahah.”
She tried to twist to get away, but the bonds held her in place as the stranger continued to tickle her, moving his fingers in a wiggling pattern.
“Pleahehehehese stop! I cahahahahhan’t take it! Heheheheheh Hahahahahahahah!
Her giggles and light laughter were a melody that seemed to flow from her as her body made feeble attempts to move.
The man switched his hands up as his left moved down to her side and his right moved up to explore her other armpit.
“Oh my godhahahahhahah! Please! Plehehehehehehase! Stop hahahahahah!
His hands continued to change rapidly as nearly every ticklish inch of her upper body was explored by dancing fingers.
“Stoooooop! Hahahahah!”
Mia continued to shout out, but the man remained silent. She had never been through anything like this before. Her mind wanted the tickling to stop, but her body loved every second of the stranger’s touch. Each motion over the crevices in her armpits drove her to madness. Each time a group of fingers teased her ribs, she cringed and fought to escape. The sides of her breasts were more sensitive than she had ever believed. Even through her shirt, the fingers found their mark and danced to the rhythm of her laughter.
“Hahahahahah. Stop tickling me! Hehehehehahahahahahahah. What do you wahahahahant?!"
She couldn’t think or focus. No thoughts to block out the tickling. No escape from the stranger’s hands. She lost track of how long this went on, and could only wonder how long it would continue. Her laughter seemed to poor out of her as she tried to beg the man to stop. He never made a sound, no hint of stopping or letting up in the least. He remained silent as the room filled with Mia’s song-like laughter. Eventually, the insanity came to a slow halt, as the man’s hands left her body.
Mia fell back into the bed in relief, exhausted and panting. She couldn’t force the smile away from her lips or stop the subtle giggles between each breath.
She cringed as she saw the stranger’s hands move again. She squeezed her eyes shut and waited for the tickling to begin. His hand lightly touched her face as he used the cloth to wipe away the sweat that had formed.
“No more…please…stop…” Mia managed, as her breathing slowly began to return to normal.
“You’re much prettier when you smile…” the stranger spoke, as he moved a few strands of hair from her face.
“Why are you doing this?” she asked, trying to see his face in the dim light.
“Why do you accept a life you don’t enjoy?” His hand left her face.
The question caught her off guard.
She heard him let out a subtle, amused laugh.
“You don’t know?” The man asked, his face just far enough to still remain hidden in the absence of light.
“Let me go…I swear I won’t tell anyone you were here. Just leave me alone.” She continued to search for his face.
“I can’t do that…you can still be helped.” The man’s voice lost its playful tone and drifted to seriousness.
“I don’t need help, my life is stable. You have no right to do this to me!” Her frustration had begun to show.
“You have so much potential…all you need is to be shown a bit of… maniacal bliss.” His calm, amused, manner had returned quickly.
“And with that, I believe it’s time to continue.” The stranger said, shifting backward.
“Wait! No! Not again! Please!” Her anxiety returned and she struggled to free herself.
The stranger grabbed the binds that held her ankles together and set her feet on his lap. She continued to fight against the ties, but they held.
“This isn’t necessary! I don’t know what you want from me!” She panicked as he adjusted her feet on top of his lap.
“There is a cure…for sadness and misery. The remedy is laughter, and now it will set you free.” The stranger said again, as his hand moved across the soles of her feet.
“NO! Please! Anywhere but there! I’m begging you! I’ll do anything you want, just don’t touch my feet!” She pleaded as she tried her hardest to pull her feet away.
“I do have one simple question…” The man paused.
“Ok! Ask me anything! I’ll answer honestly I swear!” Desperation had taken over as she realized she couldn’t free herself.
“Does this tickle?” The man’s playful tone retuned as the fingers on his right hand scribbled over her feet.
“AHAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHA!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! STOP IT! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! STOOOOOOOP! HAHAHAHAHAHAH!"
Laughter erupted from her body as she squirmed and struggled against her bonds and the man’s tickling fingers. His left arm held her feet in place.
“Well, at least you chose to answer honestly.” The stranger laughed as his fingers tickled her wiggling toes.
“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! HAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAH!” She began to lose herself in laughter.
His fingers went back to scribbling over each sole, always finding a sensitive area. Mia’s feet were smooth, soft, and incredibly ticklish. The stranger’s fingers scratched below her toes and moved down the arches of her feet.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA IM BEGGING YOU, PLEASE!!! HAHAHAHAHAH STOHAHAHAHAHAP! STOOOOOOP! HAHAHAHAHAH
Mia bucked as much as she could while each touch to her feet sent her into hysterical laughter.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! HEHEHEHAHAHAH NO MORE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The man slowed his fingers but continued to explore the ticklish delight of her feet.
“Hehehehehehehehehe.Ahaehehehehahahahahahahehah”, Her giggles were frantic but still maintained the lovely melody.
He slowly stopped tickling, but kept her feet in his lap.
“So, how do you feel?” The man said, as he rubbed her soles.
“I…I don’t know…I guess I feel…alive.” Mia said, as she fell back into the bed and relaxed again.
The smile came back to her face. She was glowing with happiness and life as she rested her head, breathing heavily.
The man untied the bonds on her ankles and removed her feet from his lap. Her legs curled up. He leaned over her and began to untie the bonds that held her wrists behind her head.
“I trust I won’t have to worry about you doing anything drastic once I untie you?” The man paused and looked at Mia.
“I won’t…” Mia looked him in his gentle, tired eyes.
She could see his face now. A young man, easily in his twenties with light skin and dark hair.
As he loosened the bonds, the stranger began to stand up from the bed. Mia leaned forward, her arms wrapping around his neck as she pulled him back down and hugged him.
“Thank you…” She said, burying her face into his shoulder.
The man held her close for a moment before standing again. He walked toward the doorway.
“Will I see you again?” She asked.
“I may check in on you from time to time.” He answered back as he left the room, fading into the dark.
“Wait! Who are you?” she called out.
There was no answer, only silence filled Mia’s house as she sat there.
She took a moment to collect herself and then turned on the light. She looked down and couldn’t help but smile. That’s when she saw it. The small cloth the man had carried was lying on the floor. Mia picked it up and flattened it out. She walked over to her nightstand, and just before she placed it into the drawer, she noticed something written in the fabric. As she looked closer she saw it clearly...
Only one word…”Jester”.
