the surprise tickle, when someone comes up behind you and tickles ribs, armpits, knees etc. taking you by surprise.
are you more ticklish that way? or is it about the anticipating of lying there
thinking of whats coming that make you more ticklish?
or does it matter?

From the Wikipedia article on tickling (Charles Darwin's theory of tickling):
"Charles Darwin theorized on the link between tickling and social relations, arguing that tickling provokes laughter through the anticipation of pleasure.[9] If a stranger tickles a child without any preliminaries, catching the child by surprise, the likely result will be not laughter but withdrawal and displeasure. Darwin also noticed that for tickling to be effective, you must not know the precise point of stimulation in advance, and reasoned that this is why you cannot effectively tickle yourself."

I'm way more ticklish when surprised like that....and for me the realization that somebody's taken the time to be that stealthy as to surprise me is embarrassing--in the good way--too

ah but you can tickle yourself...so Darwin was wrong as usual..

hmm to me it doesn't really matter..i know the anticipation of being tickled makes my skin tingle..

Both work for me...though, I agree, if the person tickling me is someone I don't know, trust, or want touching me, then the desired reaction, (laughter) will quickly be replaced with a backhand to the face and a knee to the groin...

Anticipation, like I'm feeling right now about going to the local dungeon tonight, is giving me tingles like Izzy described...and I can't wait...

The surprise tickle will invariably send me through the roof--I squeal, I convulse, I writhe sharply away from the encroaching fingertips. It's a completely uncontrollable reaction, which is sometimes regrettable because depending on the setting (such as, say, my office) I may not want to be seen squealing and convulsing and writhing sharply by everyone in the room.

It is also, I gather, a highly hilarious reaction, because it's always greeted with delighted laughter on the part of the tickler and her onlookers, and it pretty much guarantees that more surprise tickles will follow in the days and months to come. I have just become her new hobby.

When I know it's coming, I either devolve into the standard (and equally embarrassing) reaction of squirming and laughing hysterically before her fingers even make contact with me... or, in my moments of greater self-control, I try grimly to steel myself against the forthcoming sensation, trying to use expectation as my weapon... which always fails; as soon as her fingers brush against me my defenses crumble and I'm laughing as helplessly as I would have if I hadn't steeled myself at all.

My wife enjoys moving up behind me and startling me with a soft gizz to my ribs  -

I've mentioned this before, but once when I was in physical therapy (my left foot was wonky), I was lying face-down, barefoot, on an examination table. The therapist was reaching for something on a stand at the foot of the table and in so doing, softly raked her fingernails across my bare sole. I was startled, albeit pleasantly. I said "whoa!". She said "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to tickle you." I said "That's all right". I wanted to add "Please do that again!", but logic prevailed!

Hmm...I wonder if I know this person...
Gotta love things that are both Physical and Therapeutic...😉

My sister does that to me all the time sometimes she sneak tickles my feet are my ribs i think i'm more ticklish then because i didn't know it was coming

I'm actually less ticklish when taken by surprised, but that might also be cause my reflexes usually don't let tickling to happen for very long when taken by surprise ^^;;.

I also find myself to be not ticklish at all when it's coming from guys, or when I'm very angry.

i actually don't like the surprise tickle, cuz its usually at random times when i don't want to be tickled. i'd rather not know where i'm going to be tickled, but know that i am going to be tickled lol.
