As some of you know on here, I have my BA in history, and Iam very interested in subjects like government and the presidents. I was just sitting here thinking today about the White House, the amazing events that have happened in American history that have happened there, and the presidents who called the White House "home".
In reality as we all know, the White House is really the people's home, and the President is merely a priviliged renter, placed there because the people want him there. Although as many know I do not agree with many of the current resident's political views, that is not the point of this thread. The point more is to examine the White House's history.
This house has had two father and son Presidents, (The Bushes of course) a grandfather and grandson, (William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison) The only man to serve a term, be defeated, and then be re-elected. (Grover Cleveland)
It has seen four presidental assasinations, (Lincoln, Garfield, Mckinley, Kennedy), scandal, one near impeachment and resignation, (Nixon) a Presidential impeachment, (Bill Clinton) A depression, numerous recessions, a terrorist attack on our country on 9-11 2001, and been home to 41 familes whose husbands were elected to serve our couuntry as the President of the United States. It is truly an amazing house where so much history has taken place. It is a house that has never had, and will never have, a permanent resident. Also, due to the 22nd amendment put in after FDR's death, will never see any president live there for more than two terms or 8 years. Simply put, it is an awesome historical place. It is a place where presidents make history, and, in Hillary Clinton's words, as she says in her new book, live history. So here's to the White House, and the Presidents who have lived there, whether you agree with their policies or not. The White House has been the people's home for 200 years through war, impeachment, depression, recessions, assasinations, and even death by natural cause to the President, as in the case of William Henry Harrison and FDR. It is a place to be admired with awe, and is a place where history will be made and lived by Presidents, from George W Bush forward, for years to come.
