I love video games. They were a big part of my childhood and brought much joy and happiness to my life, even when there wasn't much to be happy about. Today I'd like to showcase a sadly overlooked market of games known as freeware. Not only are these games completely free to download, they kick all sorts of ass! Let's get started!

Cave Story - http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php

You play a robot that wakes up in a cave and this is your story. This is game feels very anime inspired, taking you on an epic quest through a mystic labyrinth floating in the sky. The character's are frigg'n awesome and so is the plot. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just move on to the gameplay. The gameplay is very unique, kinda as if Mega Man and Metroid had a bastard lovechild. It's a decent platformer with a good amount puzzle solving while you run around blasting the ever loving crap out of the swarms of enemies with a wide variety of weapons you slowly but surely add to your arsenal, all of which you level up by collecting the golden trinkets enemies drop when you kill them. Getting hit by enemies causes your weapon level to go down, so you hardly ever feel the trinkets go to waste and I've personally never grown tired of laying waste to everything in my path. All in all a very fun game. Give it a whirl!

Iji - http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php

You play as the daughter of the head scientist of a massive military research facility. You just minding your own business, touring the complex with your siblings and seeing all the amazing stuff father does for a living when suddenly the planet is alpha-struck by an invading alien force. The next thing you know, you wake up in a lab only to be informed that pretty much everyone you know and love is dead and that your body is a reconstructed nano-cyborg built to single-handedly combat the alien threat.

This game freaking awesome! What I love about this game is that Iji is definitely not the super soldier type and doesn't enjoy the prospect of having to kill things. As a matter of fact, the storyline is entirely dependent on the choices you make and whether or not you choose to be a pacifist. The gameplay is a delicious mash-up of side-scrolling shooter and action RPG. You gain experience by collecting nano that can be found just lying around, in metal crates you can open by successfully cracking them and by killing enemies. You level up after collecting enough nano to earn a tech point. You use these tech points by spending them at nano stations which increases one of your attributes to better fit your style of play. These nano stations are plentiful, often grouped and scattered through out any given sector, so it's very open ended on how you want to play the game. I highly recommend checking this one out.

Herocore - http://www.remar.se/daniel/herocore.php

This game is kind of a cross between Metroid and Gradius. You fly around with a jet pack through an enemy filled maze finding ways to open doors and killing bosses. If this sort of game sounds up your ally, give it a shot. It's pretty decent.

Garden Gnome Carnage -http://www.remar.se/daniel/ggc.php

This is a fun little game to pass the time. You're a garden gnome who hates Christmas, so he tied himself with a bungee cord to the top of his large brick apartment building of which he converted into a death machine on tank threads, using his body as a flail to defend against Santa's never ending army of helpers. You can grab bricks off the building and throw them like grenades and call in airstrikes when you start getting over whelm. This game is pure crazy, mindless fun if you can get past the bizarre premiss.

Knytt - http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Knytt

This is a platformer with a very relaxing ambiance. The main emphasis of the game is more focused on exploring and trying to find all the engine parts of the UFO you crashed in order to get off the beautiful and expansive planet you're now consequently stranded on. The music is soothing and the secretes to discover are worth while. This is a very chill game and worth a gander at.

Knytt Stories - http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Knytt+Stories

The Creator of Knytt took his game and created an engine for users to create their own content. The game comes with three levels authored by the game's designer, all of which I recommended checking out and I have a significant archive of good levels created by other players if anybody is interested. My favorite level of all time is Don't Eat the Mushroom by Uncle Sporky. If you enjoyed knytt, you'd love this game.

Within a Deep Forest - http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Within+a+Deep+Forest

This game was made by the same guy who made Knytt and Knytt stories. It's another very relaxing and ambient game. This time you play as a super bouncy ball that's on a mission to disarm a bomb. There's a bit more emphases on puzzle solving, which is to say knowing which ball to use to get where you need to go. If you enjoyed the previous two games, I say give it a shot.

La-Mulana - http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=lamulana

This game is freaking huge and is essentially one giant love letter to the MSX system, a video game system that exclusively came out in japan. Gameplay is based off of an MSX game called The Maze of Gallious. If you haven't played it, don't worry about it, for it's not a requirement for you to enjoy the game. In comparison to the other games I've posted so far, this is by far the hardest. Don't let scare you away though; this game is very doable. Just avoid the bonus area Hell Temple at all costs. The first things you want to buy are the Game Master rom, The Glyph Reader rom and the Hand Scanner. In this game, you make your way through the ruins of La-Mulana; solving its puzzles, taking its treasures and beating up its bosses. If you are up for a challenge, give this game a try.

Alright, I feel this is a decent enough selection to keep people entertained for a while. Check'em out and let me know what you think. If you have some suggestions of your own, feel free to post them. I love trying new games.

God I LOVED video games (or USED TO before they became complicated)! I miss the simple Final Fantasy type RPG's (like IV, V, and VI). VII was so damn HARD for me because it was the FIRST TIME I had ever HAD to try BUTTON TIMING PUZZLES (which I HATE WITH A PASSION)! What I wouldn't GIVE for a simple RPG being released for the 3DS!

I know what you mean. I've been playing through ChronoTrigger on my DS and been having a blast with it. That is my absolute favorite RPG of all time. In my opinion, the JRPG hit its heyday on the Super Nintendo. Nowwa days, it's as if people just don't know how to make a simple good game anymore.
