Before we get started, here are the terms:

Cougar—a woman over 40 who likes younger men because she doesn't like older men. Usually a cougar doesn't sexually pursue younger men but is attracted to these younger men, typically more than eight years her junior. The origin of the word is debated

Cub—a younger male who is going out with an older partner, often paired with the term Cougar.

Puma—a woman in her late twenties and thirties who dates a younger man (i.e., 20-somethings), often considered a "cougar in training". It also means a cougar whose age disparity is less than 8 years.

Manther—the male version of a cougar. From the portmanteau of man and panther (another name for the animal the cougar).

What makes this subject so attractive?

Is it that some men (not all) find older women to be more mature then younger women?

Can the above be said for younger women dating older men?

Please discuss, and give your views on this subject.

Now this is a topic I can talk about a bit. Very fascinating human dynamics going on here. What really intrigues me is the choice of terms for the male "cougars"...since it's so funny. Seriously? Manthers? :rolleyes

Anyhoo...

There are a lot of reasons an older person will date/mate with a far younger one. The most obvious is strictly sexual, and quite often the case with what you call "cougars". Simply put...women reach a sexual peak right around the same age they classically seek younger men, who happen to be at their sexual peak. This isn't always the case...there could be psychological or social reasons. A need to feel younger, to connect with years past and a lifestyle gone. Men are not the only ones who are capable of mid-life crises...although it's very short-sighted to always chalk it up to that.

Speaking of the men...the reasons for being with far younger women are varied. Again, the "mid-life crisis" explanation is always the easiest to go to, the one most focused on by the media, but not always the true reason. The interesting part is when you split the numbers up along lines of "vanilla" and "kink". In the 'nilla world, men may date younger women simply because it's the trappings of success. Going back to our more primal states, which still genetically exist in us, the more successful males got the bigger payoffs. More food, longer lives...and better mating rights. More on that later.

Within the world of kinksters, lifestyle BDSM players and the like...the older male/younger female dynamic is far more prevalent and more readily accepted. This lifestyle is heavily based in traditional roles, people seeking to "be what they are" on that same primal level. There are male dominants in their 40's, 50's and even 60's with submissives/playmates/pets in their 20's. And these girls absolutely adore them.

So, it gets thrown back to the primal. It's easy to see why the males wish younger females and why it works. One, the males seek the most fit and fertile females from a "hard-wired" standpoint...and you can throw in the trappings of success as seen within the context of the BDSM world. This is where the younger female subs get what they are seeking. The older, more experienced males for protection and "mentoring". Simply put...an older dominant has more experience and is less driven by sex for himself than a younger one.

You can also delve into Daddy/girl relationships, but that's just gonna cloud the waters more. The ironic thing is that a large portion of these dynamics aren't age-related, but station or role related. I myself am a Daddy dominant, with a sub/partner only seven years my junior...almost negligible at our age. The same generation. While we may still play with others, often younger...the "play" part of it is just that with others...play. Feeding all of those primal roles we discussed earlier. The actual relationship must go far deeper...and it is rare that a relationship with a vast age difference is going to last for a very long time. Which is why I'll play with younger folks, but I'm only interested in the relationship with a person around my own age.

One last thing we haven't looked at is love. The eternal variable. There are times when it's simply a matter of two people falling in love despite vast differences in age, social standing and generational ties. It happens. And I say go for it, and don't judge. 🙂

The bottom line is...there are a lot of reasons for these relationships to happen. Only a few of which we've even discussed so far. I personally don't really even like the terms "cougar" or "manther" or whatever you want to call it. It gives the immediate perception that what's going on is somehow predatory. And it usually is not.

thanks for your insightful post, as far as the term "manther" i did not make this up, i did my research and asked some of my girlfriends and that is the term that is being used to describe an older male dating (or mating) a younger female.

I think the manther thing is using the wrong species... as an older lady friend once put it "men are dogs". Besides, what happened to sugar daddies and cradle robbers? At great risk of sounding like I troll, I have something to add here.

It seems some of the men here are getting upset that their male oriented word for a cougar is a clunky portmanteau of man and panther. However, there is no reason to fret guys!

Think of it this way, a male came up with the term cougar for a woman who dates younger men. This is all well and good, and in fact, somewhat clever.

Given this chain of logic, it would be logical to believe that a woman came up with manther. A little less clever, and very tacky. So, who is the more creative and smooth of the two genders? The ones who created a clever term like cougar, or the equivalent to a second grade come-back with a spin off the word "panther" 😛
