The last few times I have done a reboot, I get a message that says "new hardware found, searching for drivers". Then a new hardware installation wizard pops up. I have not added any hardware to my computer. Any ideas?

One piece of hardware may have inadvertently become uninstalled. Have you installed any new programs or software updates (including Windows updates) recently?

I have not installed any new software, and when Windows updates automatically it will also reboot my computer if I don't see the prompt. The only external "hardware" I have is my printer and speakers, unless I am mistaken about what hardware is. That is quite possible. 🙂

You can check to see if some piece of hardware isn't properly installed. What version of Windows are you running? I'll direct you to the Device Manager (If you know where it is, open it and let me know).

Far as I know HDS, I have the latest addition of Windows. Not sure where to find the Device Manager.

Well, the first few steps are the same. Open the Start menu and find "Control Panel." Open it.

Do you see a "System" icon in that window? Open it, and let me know what it says.

OK.. this is what I get.

Windows XP.

Professional.

Version 2002.

Service Pack 3.

Guess I'm not as updated as I thought.

Okay, now we know. In that System window, click the "Hardware" tab and then click the "Device Manager" button. Look through the list; do you see anything (you may need to expand sections by clicking the plus icons) that has a question mark or other symbol over it?

Here is what I found.

- ? Other devices

? Unknown device

Everything else has a + sign to the left. I don't see my printer there, and it's not working. Could that be the issue? I don't get a "can't find printer message".

The unknown device is the problem. I don't know if it is your printer or not. You might want to try reinstalling the printer, if you have the software CD that came with it (or are able to download the drivers for it). Do you need a walk-through for that, or do you know how to do it? I'm happy to provide if needed.

I have the CD around here someplace. When I can find it, I'll give that a try. I know how to do it. Thanks for all your help my friend. :yourock:
