Those .txt clips

I see several clips here that end in ".txt". Some say you can view them by deleting the ".txt" extension when you save them. Well, how can we do that when we save them and the ".txt" part doesn't show in the filename?

Also, how do video files get assigned a ".txt" extension in the first place? I don't get that.

In the folder, click Tools > Folder Options...

Under the View tab, uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types.'

Of course this wouldn't be a problem if people uploading would zip the files properly. There is no need to rename the .0, .1, .2 etc. files as .txt files to upload them, you can put them in a zip. http://www.winzip.com. Don't be lazy. Thx

This is a general "problem" with the split files. The video itself does not have the .txt extension. The big files are split using Hacha or some other similar software. The extension given is something like .0, .1, .2, etc. or .001, .002, .003, etc. Those extensions are not valid for attachments in messages. Valid extensions are .txt or .zip, among others. The easiest thing to do, it to ZIP all the split files and post them after they are compressed. People downloading the attachments just need to download them and unzip them. After they are unzipped, then you join them with Hacha or another software.

However, some people go through the pain of renaming all the files to have "dummy" .txt or .zip extensions. The people downlaoding the attachments then have to remove the dummy extension and join them. This does not always work (not sure exactly why) as you get "Invalid file" errors if you try to join them after removing the extensions. I think this workflow is more prone to human error instead of just zipping them for real.

Well, he said it..+.+; and of course, ppl could upload them without the .txt extension, but hey, they're contributing and I'm thankful for that =D

ktickler: I'm not sure, but I think i've been able to join every clip on this site, except the ones that are obviously not working *_*; (wrong upload) but that doesn't have anything to do with .txt extensions

I haven't had any troubles downloading or playing any of the .txt clips. Donwload the clip with the .txt, don't rename it when your saving it. After it's done go to the folder and right click file and rename. Remove the .txt and it should work fine.

That did the trick. Thanks, Canadian Ninja!

Everything could be so much easier if people would post their splits in rar format. Winrar has been postet in several posts. No zipping needed after splitting.

I agree with Red. At OCMB, all split clips are posted in WinRAR, so there's only one unzip tool and one procedure needed to join the clips. Although WinRAR is shareware, the unzip portion remains free even after the 40-day trial period expires.

I agree

I really appreciate people taking the time to upload, but that .txt extension is a pain. WinRar or even zipping is some much less labor intensive when downloading the files.

There is a problem with multi-volume archive splitting; the (start of the) clip can't be previewed from the first archive(s), as opposed to zipped hacha or hjsplit files. This might not be a problem for broadband users but it might be for those with slow / dial-up connectins. Also, not everyone has RAR, and technically it costs...; however zip archives can be opened even with the Win explorer.

I didn't know that hacha/hjsplit files could be previewed from the first part -- that's helpful information for me, because I'm still stuck on dial-up. Thanks for the info, TT39 🙂

If it was me you were addressing, then FYI I don't use obscure and dubious software, especially for important operations such as archiving. Not to mention there's no guarantee it will work with the latest archive version.
Also, an example of stability and reliability on its part:
"Filzip 3.03 does not start correctly on a Windows XP without ServicePack 2, but displays a Access Violation error message (see bug #159) and stays unusable.
Filzip 3.04 solves this problem. If you did not encounter any problems so far, an update might not be necessary. "

Stick to the classics, boys 🙂
