Fun fact.

Canelli is considered a bit of a blight on Italian tickling history.
Back then people used to love it and the videos: it was a source of free fetish contents.
Currently tickling fans tend to take a dimmer view on it.
Basically, it was never clear how consensual that stuff was: I knew some of the people involved with the ren-faire, and they said they had the ladies sign waiver forms.
But they never mentioned to them they'd become fodder for a fetish.

Then there was a bit of a kerfuffle when a French guy tried to film the tickling shows.
The guys from Canelli took offense, and allegedly kicked him out.
It even became a thing over TMF, and one of the Canelli guys spun a sad story to Myriads, pretending the evil French guy surreptitiously filmed the tickling sessions and sold them online.
Myriads stormed the Italian forum telling everybody that anybody sharing Canelli-related stuff would be banned.

But at its core it was all a lie: it was one guy from Canelli staff itself, who shared the shows in the first place, in VHS.
He tried to make money out of something free, and basically opened a can of worms.
The guys from Canelli never stopped filming those videos, but other re-enactors resented them: they claimed there was no need for the tickling shows, and it only attracted undesirable people.
People from Canelli played dumb, claiming they never knew tickling was a fetish, but clearly they weren't so innocent themselves.
Ironically, the other re-enactors were secretly kinksters themselves, and it wasn't unclear how pure their concerns were, when throwing mud on the Canelli stuff.

Recently, some guys are still trying to make money from those videos again, on Patreon.
The guys from Canelli are trying to close these shops, in a never ending C&D whack-a-mole.

So... yay controversy!

I didn't know this about Canelli RenFaires ; only heard rumors about french RenFaires (popular on the web, too, but less than Canelli).
Before Canelli's RenFaire, I used to see some pictures from Tickle Palace (by Kujman), and more recently, a tickling studio makes videos a bit similar to "tickling RenFaires", more exactly "ASMR tickling", with women in stocks getting their feet tickled in public, supposed to be a "therapy" or so...

Anyway, my fictional universe is mostly inspired by the historical "legend" of Canelli than their modern reconstitutions.

There aren't really clues that tickling was ever used as real torture method in the past, but nowadays, it's often presented as an hypothetic "torture" enough soft to can be shown to kids without violence.
After all, laughing is for sure less violent to see than crying or screaming.

Anyway, I think tickling is not so innocent in the eyes of a young child, especially for a ticklish child who can feel it like a real torture, so if it's represented at the same time as something enjoyable, with laughters, which normally evokes pleasure, the paradoxal duplicity in the brain of a child builds also soon a paradoxal erotic pleasure, that adults call "fetish" or "paraphilia".

I presume (but I may be wrong) that most of tickling fetishists got their fetish since childhood, at least for those who are ticklish themselves.

About Popeye, some scenes look strongly linked to foot tickling fetish, sometimes foot fetish only, sometimes tickling bondage, but are these scenes intended to represent these fetishes or not...? After all, perversion is in the eyes of the beholder 😉
