Could you explain to me how you color a pic drawn with pencil? I've no idea how to do that.

It took quite a bit to do the colouring. I've separately coloured each char and the background, and pieced all together later.

I'm particularly happy about the knight; I've tried to stick as closely as possible to mid-XIV cent. fresco art.
Drawing the individual chainmail links took a while.


Now, let's talk business: the technique. As you've seen with the monochrome version, I like to give some base colouring to make chars stand out.

I use PSP, and employ a layering system to "paint" over the BW char a couple of coats. It's just the basic colours and maybe one or two highlighting coats.

Okari, you're great with colour, but I bet you do it in a different way, don't you? After that initial coat, I duplicate the monochrome version, and merge one copy with the colour coat - and smooth it out until I get an even shading.

Then I add subtler highlights and shades, and some more colour to flesh out some areas. Clothing doesn't require it, unless I want it to look stained. Skin, on the other hand, blushes or bruises, so I add red or purple tones to suggest the blood rich tissues.

I like to add some further detail on metallic or shiny areas, such as rivets, gems, lips and eyelids.

If you'd like me to, I'll post a larger version; resizing somewhat ruined some of the finer details.

I use the BW version as a base, and I actually merge it twice. Once to get the base shading. Twice to pick up details.

My usual style is not suited for tk art - it takes too much time, and the result is not as lovely as I first hoped it would.

I spent too much time on a knight nobody really cared to see - and resizing blurred the meaningful bits. 😀

I think I'll redo this pic a bit.
Then we'll see. 😀

Actually it's been a great time for me too. 🙂
Since I started posting my pics, I've esperienced a consistent growth in my drawing skills.

All the good response I first got prolly inspired me in trying something new and more complex than my usual, non-tk pics.

Since I had no need for elaborate posing or colouring, I had never tried, before!

Well it's good that you've been inspired! It's always nice when, as an artist, you jump over a mental hurdle and try something new or improve what you are doing.
I tend to go in spurts. I'll try some brand new style I've never done before and do that for about a week until I get bored and then I do something entirely different.
If you look in Images somewhere a while back I posted something called Tickling Photo/Art or something which was a really cool mix of photo and computer art. I did nothing but draw stuff (non tickling) like that for about 2 weeks and I havent touched it since. Weird. 😛

It happens to me with characters or subjects.
I get struck with an idea, and I portray it constantly, over a long time.

It could be medieval characters, fantasy races, weapons and armours, robots, whatever. I jump at it, as if infatuated, then all of a sudden I calm down - getting back to other subjects, as if I had to "assimilate" something new by repeatedly drawing it.

It's the same thing with tk art. I'm churning out an impressive 0.75 pics per day. I've passed months with a measly 0.25 per week!

It's really a matter of inspiration - and overcoming mental hurdles. Just the word I had in mind. 🙂
