Tickling at Renfairs

Hello everyone! Just joined the forum. I have a question regarding renfairs. There are countless pictures on the net showing "damsels in distress" being tickled in stocks at various renfair events.
I was just wondering ... is this something that normally happens through out the day at the renfair or is this a rare thing where you got to be at the right place at the right time?

I'd hate to drive several hours just to see jugglers and dudes jousting (not that there's anything wrong with these things! lol)

Actually...though there are tons of stories and pics incorporating renfaire themes, I don't think there's much tickling to be found at the real ones. If you're interested in finding tickling, you might want to check out the gatherings section and attend one in your area.

Welcome, welcome bicyclette (I'm part of the unofficial welcoming commitee)!!! Having never been to a ren fair, I suppose I should not be answering this question. However, I'm given to the impression that tickling does occur occasionally outside the very specific Italian ones of which we keep seeing clips turn up (I have found some mainstream pics on the web that do not pertain to those clips). Jousting is probably more prevalent, though 🙂 .

Slightly off subject...

I was at a Ren Fest in Md. about ten years ago. They had no tickling... but had some people giving "foot massages" (at a small price) including some very attractive young ladies.

I saw a middle aged man approach, take a seat, and indicate he wanted one.

At the time, I believe there was a Md. law that prohibited receiving money for providing a massage to a member of the opposite sex. (I believe it has since repealed as a result of gender discrimination claims) 😛

Anyway... a man approached him to give the customer his foot massage. You should have seen the look of shock and disgust on the guy's face. He ulitmately declined... in front front of a dozen or so strangers watching the incident transpire.

Tickling at ren. faires used to be an "East Coast only" occurence, but it's been spotted in the last two years on the West Coast. Seen it at two of the faires I work.

Gatherings are a more likely scenario to see tickling, as TicklingDuo mentions. Besides, you have the chance of getting to enjoy some of the tickling yourself, where the stuff at faires is quite out of reach, roped off from the public.

Before you race out to a Renaissence Faire, UnclStevel, do know that I speak of California. Beyond what I've witnesses here, personally, in independent faires around the state (as opposed to the larger company-run faire out off of Interstate 80), the only faires known to have had this are through report from Kurt Jelenik, or Kujman1, and that stopped back when USENET was still fun.

Seems that some people contacted the faire board in an East Coast state concerning this, for whatever reason, and such brought a demise to Kujman's performance. Sad, too, 'cause he was playing "within bounds" with the crowd, as I'm told. All of my information, though, is through Kurt, and through others, so I can't vouch for complete accuracy, primarily 'cause I don't recall ALL the specifics. Those did end when he moved here, sometime back in 96 or 97. I'd have to ask QBWeaver for specifics on that.

Also, do understand that such is a casual performance, untimed, and rare. I wish not to give the impression that they're ever-present at faire, but, rather, that they do now occur out here. I was personally impressed that someone took the opportunity to play. Improv performing is a fun art.

Kujman moved here in September of '97 and was here until March of '99. I saw many of his Renfaire videos while he lived here and as DVNC said his play was well within boundaries at the faires. He had a whole troupe with specific acts that they performed some involved the stocks and some did not. It was very creative and looked like lots of fun.

During the time he lived with me we did not do any local Renfaires here in California unfortunately. I would have liked to but the chance never arose.

Hopefully his videos will be available soon so those of you who order them can enjoy the antics that went on back then. You'll probably see Kujman as "the sheriff" arresting people and putting them in stocks, Cindy "the mute" in stocks, Tracy and even Kujman in the stocks himself.

As far as I know there are generally stocks or pillaries at Faires, as I've seen them, but I don't know of any other specific act that encompasses the use of them other than the Canelli tapes from Italy.
