Ironically "soccer" is a British term, not an American one. The "soc-" came from "asSOCiation football" (as opposed to rugby etc.) and it was then adopted in the states too. But then the British decided to stop calling it soccer and to start calling it football, but the Americans and Canadians didn't join them in the change.
