To all Artissts: great streetfigeter reference

That site might prove to be very useful later on. Thanks for sharing the link. 🙂

Having official artwork to use as references is always the best material requesters can give an artist, in my opinion, because then you're working with the authentic character and can rest assured you're drawing the character accurately, and not a fan variation and such. This is especially true if the artist has never seen, heard of, or has drawn said character(s).

I've been in plenty situations where people ask for a character I'm not fimilar with, but they don't give me the material I need, or they assume (like they do with most artists) that the artist already knows the character, the series, etc ., and doesn't need the references. Even if that would be true, its still worth the time to go the extra mile for the artist to make their job easier. I'm sure they'd appriciate it. 🙂

i know what you mean, but I usually just turn them down if I don't know wtf their talking about and they don't have the courtesy of leaving me any reference, though I haven't done that many request.

I usually turn them down too. Don't want to be mean about it, but if they're not willing to help me out and/or expect me to go out of my way to find the material myself, then theres less incentive to want to draw for them...for FREE. Alot of people seem to forget that its free, and that with a freebie comes attached at least some responsibility and consideration for the artist. This whole issue becomes even more clear when someone is in the right to be charging for their work, like myself. I'm at a point where I can only afford to be spending my time on commissions for people who want my quality work. To do anything for free (for anyone but close friends or through kiribans, contests, etc.), at my current level, would be taking up a large portion of my time. We're not talking doodles and sketches here, but portrait-quality stuff. So, yes, if I was to do draw quality stuff for free to begin with, the requester should definitely be more considerate of me, my time, and my resources. Otherwise, they're just monopolizing my time...time that could have been put to use working on something that would actually be making me money or furthering my artistic endeavors.

I don't think I could ever do this kind of thing for money unless it was extremely difficult. I mean it just wouldn't feel like work to me, and if it did, then I probably wouldn't be doing it to begin with. There's no point in drawing if it's not fun, right? that's only my philosophy though. I'm sure that when/if I became a graphic novelist, then hell yeah there'd better be some kind of incentive for busting my ass but for individual works, those are for fun-- to relax. But like I said, that's just me.

Well, its all a state of mind to begin with, being an artist. If you have gotten into the habit of drawing only for work and never for fun, then your mind is likely to see pleasure as a secondary objective to money and it might not ever be as important to you. Some artists can live that way and be happy, the money they make justifying their personal sacrifice.

True enough, but at what point does artistry become materialized? After the first paid commission?

It becomes materialized when you draw it. Whether it's a commission or not doesn't have anything to do with it. Thats kind of an odd question to ask, unless you meant something else. If you meant to ask "when does an artist know they've become successful in the art world", then the answer is dependant on what their objective was. If it was just to draw as a hobby, then obviously anyone can draw and considering whatever doodle they draw a success, since they drew something. If you're gauging success by professionalism or money-making, then getting your first paid commission, even as an amateur, would be your first step into success, as that was your objective- either to make money or begin the transition from amateur to professional.

that being the case, I gauge my success based on the pieces reception by those I show it too; if it is a popular piece or if the comments on it are mostly positive, then i realize that I've progressed in some way or another. The more critical the audience, the stronger an artist I can become.

This has been an entertaining conversation, Vlad. We should start more of these ^_^

Yes, we should start more. 🙂 I like having conversations like this too. Although, I'd imagine it might be boring or not apply to some people, if they're not artists themselves. In a sense, these are almost artist-exclusive topics in that artists are the ones we'd be expecting to talk to. Thats a shame, since it limits the number of people we could expect....on the other hand, though, it keeps the topic and posts managable and under control.

yes, that's true. I feel like this has become the artistic equivalent of the 700 club XD
I suppose its better than having too many senseless interventions by people wanting to know what the hell it was we were talking about. The less people involved in the conversation, the less stressed it is because your responses are to a single person rather than a collective.

The only downside I can think of, at the moment, is that people watching this and finding no personal relevance in it, might wonder why we're not just speaking in private. I can understand how, from an outside perspective, two people talking about something that only concerns them at this moment (we're the only two talking, but not the only two reading) might seem either unnecessary or that it needs to go somewhere else.

However, it should stay here, since how are any other artists supposed to chime in if they want to?

I'd actually prefer if other artists got involved in this conversation.
