As if hurricane season isn't bad enough, we have to have these blasted summer storms that brings twisters with them.

One hit here about an hour ago and has landed a few large trees over the road making leaving my neighborhood impossible unless I feel like hiking in the rain. It won't be passable for a while because the road crew won't be out to move them till the storm moves out. Grrr:rant:

Anyway, just had to get that out before my power goes out again. *sigh* Anyone else having weather "issues" today?

Jo

Here in NY I once saw a tornado in the far distance but it never got closer. Scared the sh*t out of me. I hope you get everything restored soon.

I'm just glad it hit the trees and not YOU! We aren't having any severe weather today...just dull and rainy. I remember a day a few years back when we (upstate NY) got hit by 27 tornadoes in a period of about 14 hours. Most were little pups. But, the group as a whole did considerable damage throughout the state. Those in the Albany area would likely remembe it the best since they got the worst of it.

sorry to hear about the damage there Jobelle. I actually find all forms of weather rather fascinating. Haven't seen a true tornado out here in AZ, but we do get sand twisters fairly often. I tell ya, ya haven't lived until you have hung on for dear life under an underpass while being hit by debree and dirt blowing 100+ mph, which I do not recommend experiencing.

back to the topic, I hope things clear up there soon. Send the rain my way, we can use it 😀

Suddenly, the miserable, paltry triple-digit heat I've been bitching about seems pretty tame...

JoBelle, I just had a tornado warning flash across my screen. that’s crazy. we are NOT supposed to have earthquakes OR tornados around here. just blizzards. I know how to handle a foot or two of snow. leave the ground and the trees right were they are thank-you-very-much!

Ann, I remember when those tornados hit. the biggest and most damaging came down one town over from me. I was at work at the time and remember watching the sky turn a strange grey/green before running in to help batten down the hatches. we have 277 Grammas and Grampas to watch out for where I work.

We don't get tornados much around CT but I remember once on a business trip to Alabama I was staying at a local motel. The plant manager of the plant I was visiting told me if I heard a loud whistle to get in my bath tub! Boy was I feeling secure sleeping in a motel room by myself in the middle of a tornado watch.

I'm only about two hours north of Ayla, and I concur...we ain't supposed to have tornadoes or earthquakes here. Now, I haven't had any tornado warnings this far north, but we've had several out-of-place earthquakes over the last two years. Most notably, we had a 5.8 that was the largest in the last hundred years in these parts. The Lake Champlain Valley region does lie along a fault line, but it usually generates something in the 2.1-3.3 area, nothing to even notice unless you're right on top of it. I was in California for that big 7.9 quite a while back...now that was an earthquake!

I'm just glad to hear you're ok. Having a few trees knocked over is pretty tame compared to what could have happened. Nature is unpredictable, and I'm glad you were out of her vengeful path. 😎

I always wanted to visit lake Champlain. I live near NY and Ohio (gee arent I lucky?). anyway, we get some nice lightening storms here, and only a couple of tornado warnings. I have a fear of getting hit by lightening.

Hey Y'all!
Thanks for the nice words!

After watching the power do the limbo with the lightening bolts, it seems the night is calm. The trucks are out and you can hear the purr of chain saws filling the night air....ahhh, who says romance is dead? 😛

We get these nasty storms about once every couple of weeks down here. If it's not something coming across land, it's some storm system coming in from the water. Either way, it's wet and windy. Can't say I mind the temperature dropping from the underside of the three digit mark. Yes Dan...that is not so pleasant, you're right! It was a right frigid 86 degrees after the storm - but then again - it WAS night time. LOL

We don't get earthquakes here much. There was one not too long back in the northern part of the state and next door in Alabama that made the news. I think I would absolutely fall down in a panic if the ground rumbled or opened beneath me. YIKES!!!!!

Hurricanes may last longer, but you have time to run from them even if you may not have a house standing when you get back.:wow: I spent my early years pretending I was immortal. Got over that, and now I'm thankful that unlike tornadoes which scare the bejesus outta me, and earthquakes that I can't even FATHOM....I have time to pack the important stuff and drive north!! S'far, it's a slow season this year, but that'll heat up soon I fear.

Sorry to ramble, but coffee, mixed with quiet, and the energy of the storm has me bouncing off the walls. I need some rope or somethin'. 😉

JoBelle, wow! You've got to have chutzpa to live where you live. Ahhhh, NYC... no tornadoes, no volcanoes, little tiny earthquakes you can't even feel... we are spoiled. Not much of mother nature's drama here. I drove through Long Island during a "nor'easter" maybe 5 years ago in floodwater up to my minivan's window. Aww, poor us! We made it to a mall parking lot on high ground and went and had a Friendly's sundae. Well, maybe if I were Lime I'd have had a heart attack while fleeing a little-league field during an amazing electrical storm with everybody yelling DON'T TOUCH THE FENCES!

Tornadoes...yikes!

Well, in the midwest we hear the sirens at least once a month. And we had lovely drills in school to prepare for them (did you know they recommended opening windows?? so there's less risk of flying/breaking glass?). I'm glad to hear you're ok, Joby. We don't have hurricanes, but we get the occasional twister or earthquake. My first year at vet school, Lafayette had a doozy of a storm - and of course, about 10 or so people killed at a trailer park. I remember because I was up at school studying and the janitor came by around midnight and told us we had to go to the basement (which coincidentally is the seat of the county morgue...creepy!). Safest place on campus. There are actually few houses or apartments equipped with decent shelter for such an event. Oh, well. Glad to hear this one is blowing over for you!!!

We were always told to open windows too. But, now, they say to not take the time for the little good it does. Unplugging the computer and major appliances to avoid them being blown by a power surge is good IF you do it during the watch period. Once the warning is sounded...then heck with appliances. Get to cover!

I've seen two funnel clouds since moving to CT. Neither ended up developing further. But, I still know that (not having any basement) our kitchen is the safest place to be in a severe storm.

Of course, if your appliances blow away, you wont have to worry about power surges (arent I an optimist?)
