what makes a town and a city different besides the size? where i live it's called a city, but only has fifty thousand people..what is the difference between a town and a city? hubby said a city has a government..is that the difference? or what?

unit5610 said:I think technically it's the form of government they use that determins citiy or town. It actually doesn't have much to do with population. There are cities with less then 10,000 people and towns with over 50,000.
Plus cities seem to have more layers of bureaucracy, more patronage jobs and just generally more bullsh*t going on.
I'm about to work for a city so I'll be finding out firsthand!

There are places as small as two digit populations called something or other city in the USA, and then there are suburban developments with multi hundred throusands of people called towns by developers who want to suggest a rural setting (Levvitttown springs to mind).
It's really just arbitrary.
The City Of Greater Pittsburgh has a population of 400,000.
In NYC 400,000 is a large neighborhood!
In Alaska and some other states, it's the population of the whole dmn state.
