Some states have signs posted along the interstates and toll roads telling you to either move over one lane,or slow down if there is an emergency vehicle,or maintenance vehicle on the shoulder. What pisses me off about the law is,they don't tell you on the signs how much you have to slow down.

It is not always possible to change lanes.

In Alabama, you have to get over a lane if an emergency vehicle is on the side of the road...unless you can't

Like anybody talking on their cellphone while driving is going to follow any such laws.

This also applies to police cars that have a vehicle pulled over. You should use your directional signal and move to the left whenever possible. In Pennsylvania this law now is applied when passing someone on a bicycle.

We have that law here because several officers have been struck and a few killed on the side of the road. If you can't move to the left then slow down. Use the flashers if possible to warn others behind of a dangerous situation.........if you have time to implement them.

Aren't you suppose to learn such things at the driving school??? Like how slow and how to drive according to the late merge / zipper method due to the moving over to the other lane?

Most of these new laws are only a few years old. A nephew of mine was tought that in drivers ed. Some states have signs on the highways telling you to either move over,or slow down. The problem as I see it is this
If you are driving in those states that have those signs posted, they do not tell you how much in speed you have to slowdown.

To my way of thinking, the states that do not have the warning signs should not be able to issue tickets for this. It is like saying there is a posted speed limit, but no speed limit signs.

I am all for getting over one lane,or slowing down. But the states that have those laws really need to put signs up.

California has this law but like so many other things...it is completely ignored. Just like the law that says move over and let an ambulance pass. Once everyone moves over several "jerks" use the empty road to zip ahead of the other traffic before moving over. I drive Interstate 5 near Los Angeles to get to work. You would not believe the things that people do behind the wheel. A lot people still text while driving even though it is against the law. You can tell who is texting because the nearly hit the cars in the next lane every time they take their eyes off the road. Then there are the women who are putting on makeup. They use their rear view mirror to apply eyeliner and lip gloss. There was one guy weaving all over the road. When I rolled up next to him I saw why. He was balancing the books for his business. Actually had a large legal-size ledger open making entries into column on green ledger paper. My favorite was the guy who was driving 10 mph in the fast lane because he had his laptop open against his steering wheel typing a report.

Like the old saying goes..."there is never a cop around when you need one". We have way too many gadgets that people love to play with while driving. There have been several cases around here of police and highway workers getting his by drivers. I bet if they checked they would find that the driver was not only distracted but actually doing something completely ridiculous while zipping along at better than 50 mph.

You can drive 50 MPH or better on the five in the LA area?

During rush hour you are of course in bumper to bumper traffic...but other than that, people out here mean business. Most do 80 in the fast lane. Which is why some Bozo who is texting runs the risk a causing a major pile up. That is also why you hear about so many wrecks when it rains. The roads are soaked from the oil that drops from cars. The rain brings the oil to the surface. Someone zipping along at 80 not only hydroplanes but also finds that he is on a oil slick.

We are not as bad as New York but we try.

I would guess that if they don't specify, it's because they expect you to use your own judgement. In other words, rather than give you a number that won't fit every situation, we're going to let you judge for yourself how slow you need to be going in order to not pose a threat to the emergency crew.

If they're pulled way off the shoulder, maybe you can zip right by at 40. But if it's 4 cop cars, plus an ambulance and a fire truck, with people swarming everywhere, you may have to slow all the way down to 15. Which would make them really sorry they had told you that 40 was the firm rule.
