Trolling for Trolls

After a morning spent in the chatroom blocking the same guy over and over, I thought that the combined minds of the TMF world should be able to defeat a bored geek who types one handed.

I'd like to make this thread a brain-storm of ideas on how we can protect our members. Drew and Phineas discussed this a little bit with me, but I thought that all of us together would come up with some different ideas.

Please reply to this thread with your own thoughts on how we can make our chatroom our chatroom again.

Apparently password protection is too expensive, so that's my first idea gone. The TMF logs IP addresses, so perhaps people could be completely removed from the chatroom by their IP addresses. Damn, that would only work on cable users, dialup people get a new IP address each time they connect... Help me out here people!

Whenever someone p****s me off in there I hit the ignore user button and they disappear.. If everyone did this at once he would be talking to himself...... If he signs on under another name, he can be ignored
again with the click of a button...responding to trolls in any way just feeds them..they live for attention....give them none...

Ray's right. The best you can do for now is to use the very powerful Ignore feature. The only reason trolls enjoy this is because they crave negative attention. Well, that and they're cowards who feel a need to hide-and-poke, but that's beside the point.

Possible solutions are being discussed, so have patience. One thing a troll doesn't have is the power of community. If he's trying to copy a screenname and start trouble, ask yourself this. Would this person really say this to me if it was really them? Just because you see words on a screen, doesn't mean that you still shouldn't know the person you've been talking to all this time. If I go in there and "Venray" starts calling me a donkey-raping-shiteater, I'm pretty sure that I'm dealing with a copy-cat. He'd never say that, regardless of what my screen is telling me. Don't be easily fooled.

Again, ignoring is your best weapon at this point. 😎

The ignore feature is the first and best way to deal with it.Other options will either be expensive(passwords),complicated(more room mods without whom the room will not open),or unfair to implement(passwords given to room mod upon arrival.This would be unfair to nonmembers.)
Just like society in general,you might have to suck it up and put up with some shit at times.For right now,just put them on ignore.

You touch on an interesting point Shark. At the moment there are only 4 active chat mods. The forum boards have over half a dozen who are always on the lookout for foul play and do their "modding" very well(Dave,EQ,Jeff, and all the rest that I'm too knackered to remember), but the chat room only has the 4. Myr(or Mobnger as I managed to typo his name once), Cosmic, Meemster and Noeyes all do sterling work when they're in there, but there's only so much they can do and only so much time they can spend there. Even then, there are certain members of this community who, when a mod does do their job, do nothing but bitch and moan and complain that they should be sacked.

I think 1 or 2 more chat mods would if not solve, at least partially alleviate the troll "problem". If it could be possible for 24 hour mod coverage in there, life would be a lot happier for those of us who respect each other.

Scratch that, I just saw that there are already 2 new chat mods on the list. Bad timing huh? LOL
