It's not a question of if HBO's new series about vampires is going to suck (no pun intended), it's a question of how much.

I base that entirely on what's been posted about series creator Alan Ball, who comes across as a Grade-A dickwad. He brags about never having seen BUFFY or ANGEL, and he rags on MOONLIGHT, a show he maybe caught one episode of. Way to go, genius, piss off the folks who could make up a ready-made audience for your show because they're already fans of vampire series. 🙄

But here's the kicker: Snob Boy thinks the perfect vampire movie was ... *drumroll* ... NEAR DARK.

Uh, isn't that the movie where the vamps didn't even have fangs? :unwell:

OMG Near Dark? I just finished that movei and it was good, but nowhere near a perfect movie. Ugh so much could have been better.

I don'[t like buffy or Angel either, but never seen moonlight so I don't know what to say about that.

I hope he can deliver...

^^ i saw previews while on the treadmill the other day..and i was liking what i saw until it had to get ugly and gory..vampires are not ugly..i always thought of them as mysterious sexy creatures of the night...these showed blood running down their mouths, their eyes getting all weird, and their faces contorting...so i was not impressed...

Dark Shadows..now they knew how to present a vampire..

these showed blood running down their mouths, their eyes getting all weird, and their faces contorting...so i was not impressed

But that is how Vampyres are. Real ones anywaty...sexy ones or aristocratic ones like Barnabas are usually made up for show. But Barnabas RAWKED.

Yeah. I never really liked any Buffy I saw, and didn't see any Angel or Near Dark, or Moonlight. All I know is I like Blood Ties (or whatever's the one on Space), Underworld, and the Blade trinity movies a lot. Also reading reading about any vamp book I can get a hold of.
I don't like the mutated, transfigured vamps- the strong, beautiful, powerful, and chiseled ones instead. Hopefully this one'll be like that. 😉

You mean True Blood jts963?

I was just going to make a post about this new series on HBO until i clicked on your thread and read what your thread was about.

I read the whole article for this series in issue #276 of my Fangoria magazine 😉

And i've never been a fan of Buffy or Angel either. And being developed by Alan Ball there is hope that this new series will have ''promise'' Since HBO wasn't even sure if they were going to green light the series from what i read in the Fangoria article. It has ''potential''

And Near Dark what a piece of art and a overshadowed film since most of the glory in the year went to The Lost Boys not Near Dark

Since i don't have HBO when the first episode of the series airs on

September 7th

Then let me know if the first episode delivers :super_hap

To be honest, of all the vampire movies and filmed series none really impressed me. They've all shown vampires to be just a bit more refined animals, thirst for blood more important than reason. While this might be true for most 'novice' vampires, the elder ones would probably not do so. Vampires are immortal and they retain their intellect after transformation. Thus, a vampire living for a century or two should really have some wisdom and great knowledge.

Also, knowing that you are immortal, what would you care for conquering all? I mean, kingdoms rise and fall, people die, everything meets it's end sooner or later. That is how the world works. If you know you are going to live to see the end of it, you don't get too attached or you will go insane. At least that's what I think. That is why, from psychological perspective, I'd like to say that Hellsing manga and it's OVA (new anime series, not the old ones) really stand out there. They portrayed it in Alucard completely, and that is prolly the only series about vamps I really liked.

OK after the first two episodes this series may have more going for it than I originally thought. There's a murder mystery that may or may not involve a vampire. Gratuitous sex and nudity galore (hey, this is HBO afterall :laughing🙂. And it appears to have more in common with BUFFY/ANGEL than MOONLIGHT: although they haven't revealed any yet, there appear to be supernatural beings other than vampires lurking about. Certainly the hints that the main character is herself something other than "pure" human are coming fast and furiously. She's got a very "early Buffy" quality about her, sans the mission of course.

I'll give it another look to see if things stay interesting or start turning formulaic and stupid.

Yeah. I never really liked any Buffy I saw,

I must speak up here, my poor deluded friend, as Buffy was easily one of the top five or six best television series of all time. Now go watch all seven seasons of it in one sitting so that we may discuss it in loving detail, or I'll be tempted to tickle you senseless.

Never read the books this new show's based on, and I don't have HBO, but I wasn't planning on seeking it out. I'm not a big Alan Ball fan, and advance critical reception made its metaphors sound pretty heavy-handed.
