ummm...okay. something random...got it...if there is a better singer out there than mark lanegan i've never heard him(her).
my top ten singers🙁in no order)
mark lanegan
howlin' wolf
billie holliday
ann wilson
thalia zedek
etta james
robert plant
chris cornell
barry manilow
johnny rotten(keep hoping for a duet with him+barry!)

That's a unique list, Wahuhu, I got into Screaming Trees back in the 90s and was really impressed with Mark Lanegan. Also picked up a couple of his solo albums, even though they were kinda depressing-sounding. And Howlin' Wolf has to be my favorite blues singer.....especially the early Sun records things.
My favorite singer for the last couple years is Neko Case, she does "alternate country" and some rock stuff with the band New Pornographers. Outstanding vocalist!:woot:

have you seen him live? i just saw him play with queens of the stone age last march in hartford. to say he transports me to another world is understatement. and i mean that in a non 13-year old girl britney spears sorta way. pick up 'field songs' if you haven't already.

Axel Rose, Eminem, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, and Rob Thomas

Eminem, Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg are all excellent entertainers but they aren't actual singers . That would be one interesting album though :wow: 😛

I'd have to add Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls, Sam Cooke, Nora Jones, Linda Rondstat (sp?)...and far too many others to name this early in the morning 😎

You people are missing out some of the greatest ones

Ivan Rebroff - The amazing russian bass that has a whopping range of 6 octaves.

Ella Fitzgerald - One of the greatest Swing Singers ever... she basically invented scat

And if you are looking for someone more contemporary... I quite like Jamiroquai (however you spell that)

HA!! Either DVNC is still asleep, or hasn't gotten around to this thread yet, either way, I beat him to something for ONCE! No disputing Ella's ability. Satchmo' though, gave birth to scat (arguably, along with every singer mentioned on this list) with the performance of "Dinah" - probably stoned off his you know what and unable to remember the words! LOL

i purposely left off greg allman. great singer, but i can't forgive anyman that has ever beat a woman. on the other end of the spectrum-my brain went into fart mode-i forgot.........donald fagen? something's wrong with me

Great choices so far! I agree with so many of those already listed, especially Chris Cornell, Robert Plant, and Chris Isaak. Also, I love Paul Rodgers, Marvin Gaye, Steven Tyler, Emmylou Harris, and of course Aretha Franklin. There are so many more, I can't think of them all right now! Basically any singer who expresses themselves with so much soul and passion is great in my book.

I'm gonna add:

Ray Charles
John Fogerty
Maggie Bell (from Stone the Crows)
Sandy Denny (from Fairport Convention)
Maddy Prior (from Steeleye Span)
Steve Marriott (from Humble Pie)

good thread

Women: Whitney Houston (pre-drug addiction era..lol), Aretha Franklin, Stehpanie Mills, Mariah Carey

Men: Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Donnie Hathaway, Peabo Bryson, Michael Jackson (from Jackson 5 thru "Off The Wall" albums only), Louis Armstrong.

I'd add Seal to the list. (Good stuff so far!)

I'm glad you brought up Misses Houston and Carey, Mr. P. You just beat me to them.

I don't know who the lady was, but I know she has great range and talent. I'm speaking of the movie the Fifth Element (Bruce Willis). The lady who did the voice for the alien diva. I'd love to hear some more of her work!

Fair enough, being a pianist I don't actually pay that much attention to singers (bar the cute/hot ones at uni)...

Actually the only singer I listen to regulary is Flora Purim. Well, I don't specifically listen to her... she just happens to be singing in alot in the early Chick Corea "Return to Forever" fusion band. But alot of you probably don't even know about Chick so I don't know why I'm bothering.

Wait... what about Mynard from Tool! That guy is a great singer... really stuffed up in the head... but a great singer.
