(CNN) -- Actor Gregory Peck, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of upstanding Southern lawyer Atticus Finch in 1962's "To Kill a Mockingbird," has died. He was 87.

Peck died Wednesday night, spokesman Monroe Friedman told The Associated Press. His wife of 48 years, Veronique, was at his side.

"She told me very briefly that he died peacefully. She was with him, holding his hand, and he just went to sleep," Friedman said. "He had just been getting older and more fragile. He wasn't really ill. He just sort of ran his course and died of old age."

(CNN) -- Legendary television newsman David Brinkley, who became a national figure co-anchoring NBC's "The Huntley-Brinkley Report" and who later hosted "This Week With David Brinkley" on ABC, has died. He was 82.

He died Wednesday night at his home in Houston, Texas, from complications from a fall.

During a career lasting more than 60 years, Brinkley won 10 Emmys, three George Foster Peabody Awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, The Associated Press reported.

🙁 I loved "To Kill A Mockingbird."

It seems we keep losing more legends these days. And I wonder who will be the ones to take their place? They just don't make 'em like they used to.

Well let's see, we have Madonna, Eminem, Snoop Doggy Dog, Curt Cobain, Mick Jagger, Keith Richardson....

Martin Sheen, Jane Fonda, Barbara Striesand....

The world has lost two great men in thier fields. I wrote a separate thread in tribute to Gregory Peck, whose body of work has meant a lot to me.

Gregory Peck was in Barney Miller, wasnt he?

NO. But there was a great comedian on the show, who's name escapes me but his TV name was Deitrich, who occasionally did a really good impression of Mr. Peck to irk people 🙂

Bella

Rest in Peace and thank you Mr. Brinkly!

I'll never forget the words I used to hear each night when my parents watched the news....

Good Night David! Good Night Chet!

Why do we refuse to believe that we can advance in every single field of human endeavour except the so-called "arts". I think we still make good films. I think we make far better films today than we ever did thirty, forty or even seventy and more years ago. Times change, society changes, but we always advance - we continue to move inexorably forward!

Sorry, but not a one of these inspires my imagination. And are we talking living legends? Didn't Cobain commit suicide?

Yes, I do believe we are moving forward. But just because we become more technologically advanced doesn't mean that all things are better than they used to be. I admire pioneers as much as if not more than those who merely improve on a good design. And I enjoy/admire many artists of today. In time, maybe we'll see if any of them have the staying power to become the class acts as these forerunners did. Maybe, too, when they pass away, I'll be impressed by what they left behind.

Frankly, I try not to criticize the living or compare them to the old timers. It's like apples and oranges for me. But I do believe that art progresses as society does. Right now, we're just in a technological whirlwind. Which seems to mean everything has to run faster/smoother/better or it becomes obsolete. Sorry, but I don't ever consider art/artists obsolete. The may be ahead of the times or behind the times. It's like comparing Degas and Dali - two great artists, different styles, different countries, different eras. It depends on your taste as to which one you prefer to hang on your wall. Modern art does not always move me as much as some of the classics. Just my opinion.

I thought I recognized thinly veiled sarcasm....didn't mean to offend. Just thought I'd make sure 😉

ROFL! Not!

Jane Fonda

Personally, it amazes me that Hanoi Jane is still a free citizen of these United States, much less a rich one. That traitor *&#$@ could walk in front of a bus or train and I'd giggle like a school boy.

But yeah, as somebody's already said in this thread, they just don't make 'em like they used to anymore. Sad, really. How do we get back to that standard? Anyone?
