Two Year Old Left Home Alone for Weeks

A 2-year-old Jacksonville Flordia girl was in good spirits Tuesday morning at a hospital after spending nearly three weeks alone in her home. Surviving only on raw pasta, mustard and ketchup,CNN was told; "The child is doing well, she was sitting up this morning, talking and laughing with the nurses." said a spokesman for Wolfson Children's Hospital. The girl was brought to the hospital Monday, suffering from malnutrition. An officer responded to a call from the child's father. Lee, 33, was at the apartment of his 22 year old estranged wife who has been incarcerated since September 10. The apartment manager had let him into the apartment, where he found his daughter. Lee had limited contact with his daughter during the process of him seeking divorce from his wife. "After having no contact for several weeks, he vigorously tried to make contact," the police report said. The mother was charged Monday with an intentional act of child abuse for leaving her daughter alone, notifying no one of the circumstances. She will appear at an arraignment hearing Tuesday morning.

don't even get me started on this topic. My stomach just turns when I hear stories like this. In the process of adopting 2 beautiful children my husband and I had to undergo a homestudy process and background checks with both of them. Who certifies anyone capible of being bioligical parents??

In Connecticut, parents who are going through the divorce process are both required, by law, to take parenting classes. I think it's a great idea, to encourage them not to use their own children as pawns in their conflicts...etc. And, it got me to thinking that it wouldn't be a terrible idea to make such classes a prerequisite for getting a marriage license.

Now, I'm just wondering if any amount of education could have prevented something like this. Do people really have to be told not to leave a 2 yr-old alone at all...never mind for three weeks?

With the many injustices that happen to children all over the world every day at the hands of strangers....one would think that the people who give life to a child would be the front line in protecting them not the ones to hurt...tragically disturbing...makes me hug my little girl that much tighter whenever I hear a bad thing that has happened to a child...
