U2 puzzle
U2 has a concert that starts in 17 minutes and they must all cross a bridge to get there. All four men begin on the same side of the bridge. You must help them across to the other side. It is night. There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it cannot be thrown, etc. Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man's pace:
Bono:- 1 minute to cross
Edge:- 2 minutes to cross
Adam:- 5 minutes to cross
Larry:- 10 minutes to cross
For example: if Bono and Larry walk across first, 10 minutes have elapsed when they get to the other side of the bridge. If Larry then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have passed and you have failed the mission.

Can you get them across in 17 minutes?

Personnel test...

This is similar to an interview question we used to slip in on certain applicants for positions at PepsiCo. It tests cognitive functions and really doesn't require elaborate tools to solve. If memory serves, there were at least 2 different combos that work...

1 & 2 cross, 2 goes back = 4 minutes
5 & 10 cross 1 goes back = 11 minutes
1 & 2 cross = 2 minutes


I'm sure amk or one of our other resident mathematicians can find a few more, but that's the general principle.....combining your fastest movers and hiding your slowest. Q

A different type of puzzle..

I've always enjoyed cryptograms. If you get good at them, you can start doing them in your minds eye instead of using paper and pen/cil. A cryptogram is a code made by substituting a different letter for each letter of the alphabet. In a particular code, for example, the l's might be replaced by j's, & the j's might be replaced by b's. Every letter is usually changed, & a different code is used for each problem. Be aware that some of the puzzles may take a while to solve, so don't get frustrated - You can make up your own rather easily as well. All in all a perfect "mind snack"!

It's a matter of letter substitution. The most commonly used letters in the english language are eatonirsh and so on so you take the phrase and substitute the letter e for the most common letter in the phrase and try to make a word. Then you can guess at other substitutions until the phrase makes sense.

It's all trial and error but can be fun and is a good exercise for the mind.

I like to work them mentally if I'm feeling "sharp", and so I tend to look for patterns, such as repeated/doubled letters and of course short phrases. Once you get a few steps into them, they usually unravel fairly quickly. Here's the complete answer guide....
