Unbelievable call

Did anybody catch the bucs colts game. it was really amazing but that last penalty in overtime was ludacris.

I thought those Roughing the Kicker and Roughing the Passer penalties late in the game were pretty petty, too.

that roughing the punter was pretty cheesy. BUT, Tampa Bay deserved to lose. if you have the best defense in the league and up 35-14, and still lose? you DESERVE IT. bad calls or not, how does the best defense give up that many points? but it's all good though. that last field goal by the Colt's kicker allowed me to win in fantasy football! i have the kicker on my team. hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Uh..

Whether they were petty or not, they were the correct calls. You don't just throw out the rulebook because it's late in a close game, especially when the penalties called are for the protection of the players. If you had played at that level I guess you'd appreciate and understand that.

Gee Tron, really? Ya think?

I'm so glad you spelled that out for us. I had NO IDEA that penalties were enforced, in part, to protect players - or had any validity in the interest of maintaining a level playing field.

Gosh, we sure are lucky to have an expert like you keeping us informed - and doing so in such a non-condescending manner, no less!

Neutron, you are an interesting person. of course there are rules to follow, but that doesnt mean that the calls made are always the correct calls. you act like none of us understand the game of football. we do. and if you really think that roughing the punter was a legit call, then your credibility as a football "expert" is in trouble. that wasnt the correct call. that punter did a Vlade Divac and FLOPPED. what game were you watching?

Same One You Were..

And yes it was roughing the punter. In case you haven't noticed the NFL is big on that this year. The players were informed in their pre season referee meeting the NFL would be taking a hard line on roughing. They know this in advance, anything close will be called. It was the correct call...

The right call.

Regardless of how insane the call itself was...it was the right call. The rule is the rule.......no matter how wrong it may seem and or be.

The call had to be made...should have been made.....was made.
The right call.

the "leaping" call was the correct call, but the roughing the punter was not a good call considering the punter FLOPPED. it should have been at least "running into the punter", not "roughing the punter". the referee obviously didnt see the flop. didnt you?

It Doesn't Matter..

The NFL looks at intent, not whether someone flopped or not. Running into the punter SHOULD be the minority call in the NFL and in fact will be this year. By NFL rules if you push a blocker back into a punter you have in fact roughed him. The whole intent of the Running into the punter rule was for those cases where a guy rolled into the punter. It's intent was never for someone on their feet OR if someone ws making a concious effort to block the punt. Concious effort is defined by the NFL as any forward motion. The players and coaches were told prior to the season the NFL would make running into the kicker a minority call this year, most to discourage teams taking shots at kickers in any way shape or form. A lot of kickers have had serious injuries the last few years, many on plays that were deemed running into a kicker. That was never the intent of the rule.
Going into the season each player was talked to by NFL officials, as were the coaches, this was explained to them. Legally even touching a kicker is considered roughing him. You won't see too many Running into the kicker calls this year, at least during the first 8 to 10 games.
Facts are, the refs don't take into account whether a kicker falls down when calling Roughing the kicker, they take into account the contact, the method of contact , and what they consider the intent of the contact. If you look closely the ref wasn't looking at the kicker after he was contacted. Don't look at when the flag was thrown, look at the ref when the actual penalty occurred.

There you learned something today.

so what you're saying is, if anyone touches the punter, they will be flagged 15 yards. a player trying to block the punt dives in front of the punter, but his body touches the punter's foot, the punter flops, and you are saying the 15 yards is deserved? whatever happened to let them play? now if someone goes barreling into the punter, sure flag em'. but in that game, the guy was on the ground, not even looking at the punter. the punter comes down and flops. is that fair? no. out of curiosity, and since you know so much, did they do the same with facemasking? after all, there is a 5 yard and a 15 yard facemask penalty.

my point is, a referee needs to make better judgment calls. there is holding on practically every play. do they call every single hold? no. look at basketball. that "Hack a Shaq" is a flagrant foul. no one is trying to go after the ball, they are hitting Shaq intentionally. like i said, referees make judgement calls, and that roughing the punter was a bad judgment call. if a referee is going to follow the rulebook to a "T", then the game would last 6 hours. let them play, and in the case of the Buccaneers-Colts game, that's what should have happened with that "call".
