are Germany still the soccer powers they used to be? I know they beat Saudi Arabia by 8 goals etc... but can they still mix it with the best?

Does anyone in the US appreciate how well there National side is doing in the world cup??? I think not!! it would be great to see them progress a far as possible but I think the Germans are a bridge too far.

I may very well be the only American who give a girrafe's panties aboutthe world cup...but WOOOHOOO....dont' rule us out yet. We could beat Germany!! REALLY!!! LOOK OUT!!! Best we've done in 70 years!!

Quite frankly Red, we are all in shock...much like when the Patriots actually won the superbowl......many didn't even realize that we had a soccer team until recent events....! Appreciate you cheerin em on..time for us Yanks to jump on the old band wagon!!!!

This tournament is a Championship of the Unexpected Events. I've seen too many dead-sure candidates stumble and fall since it began, so everything's possible. No wager, sorry, Joby... 😉
The German team presented themselves as the laughing stock of the soccer world during the preceding qualification games (along with the Netherlands), and they only got their ticket to the World Cup in a lucky loser round versus Ukraine, imagine!
Their primary target was to survive the first round. But the astronomic victory over Saudi-Arabia gave them the necessary boost of confidence. So, without knowing what really happened, Germany is in the quarterfinals, France/Argentina/Portugal/Paraguay are out, and I can only hope that our team didn't bite off too much to chew.
But I think they will eventually manage to beat USA, although it won't be an easy fight. Brazil, Spain, Italy, probably England as well, would be a much more difficult adversary.
So, may the best team win, and let's hope we'll get a decent referee (unlike many I've seen recently)! Tally-ho, Red, we'll meet again in the finals! 😛

Yes, I must concede that the US team was MUCH better than the German one in today's shape. But sorry, we won nonetheless... 
30% (at least!) of our success was due to Lady Luck, 30% due to our excellent keeper Kahn, 30% due to the US team's inability to make use of their chances, and 10% to the player who scored the winning goal (Ballack). 10% which made all the difference, figure that! But that's soccer: only the result counts...
Congratulations to the excellent performance of the US boys! 😎

How can that be? Didn't we threaten them with economic ruin? Military action? Deporting Britney to their country? Are they men or machines...damn them, we have failed! Okay, perhaps we weren't really trying..yeah...that's what happened....the guys wanted to get back in time to see the conclusion of the American Idol show, so they tanked a bit!! Makes perfect sense now...

Thanx for the show of respect, Hal. I was happy with the showing if not the result. We played hard for 90 minutes. The U.S. team had a great run (probably our best ever) and raised our expectations. I really am proud of their performance in this Cup. Good show, indeed!
Now perhaps this is my German blood talking, but I'm pulling for you, Hal. Go out and get that cup!!!

Oh no, I won't get that cup myself. I'll sit in my armchair and watch comfortably, with a cold drink in my hand... 😀
But thanks for the good wishes anyway. We'll sure need it for our match versus South Corea next Tuesday! All I hope for is that we're spared a game versus Turkey. We've got so many Turkish immigrants here, and their celebrating on our streets is still blocking large parts of the town, cars honking like crazy, and Turkish flags everywhere! It's as if we were just a part of Istanbul... 😛
