In order to use the chatroom you will need a recent version of Sun's Java platform. Installation of Java is straightforward.

Installation - Mac users:
Mac users should have Java already installed and see it automatically updated. If you use a Mac and have issues with the Chatroom you may need to run an update check. Alternatively, and more likely, it may be unrelated to Java. Post in the Technical Support forum if you continue to experience difficulties.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Installation - Windows, Linux, Solaris users:
1. Navigate to http://www.java.com
2. Click the large "Free Java Download" button at the center of the page
3. Internet Explorer 7 users will be presented with an installation dialog. Allow any actions it asks to do and follow instructions presented. Users of other browsers, and Internet Explorer users if automatic installation fails, should navigate to the "all Java downloads here" page
4. If you are using Solaris or Linux you likely know where to go from here. Select the right download and go; if you have trouble post in Technical Support. Windows users should download the "Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline" file; note that it is the Offline and not the Online version
5. Note where you download the file to; locate it once the download is completed and run the file
6. Let installation complete and restart your computer
7. Head back to http://www.java.com and look for the "Do I have Java?" link underneath the large "Free Java Download" button
8. Click that link and wait for the results. It should say you have the latest version; if it doesn't you have a problem and should read on
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Problems - removing earlier versions of Java:
Do you have the latest version of Java or have an earlier version and yet still cannot chat? It may be prudent to look for and remove all old versions and run the earlier installation procedure again. This applies to Windows.

1. Open the "Start" menu

2. Open the "Control Panel"

3. Choose from the following depending on your version of Windows:
--i. Windows Vista users should look to the left and find "Classic View"; select this
ii. Now locate "Programs" (It may read "Programs and Features") in the list of icons and open it
iii. In Programs select "Installed Programs"
--i. Windows XP users should locate "Add/Remove Programs" and open it

4. In either version, examine the list of programs. One or more items should have "J2SE Runtime" or "Java(TM) 6" as part of the name

5. Select and uninstall all of these

6. Restart your computer and, once back on, perform the installation instructions outlined earlier

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Problems - the latest version fails:
One occasion the latest version of Java breaks the chatroom. In this case it is advisable to install an earlier version.
1. Navigate to http://www.java.com
2. Click the large "Free Java Download" button at the center of the page
3. Internet Explorer 7 users will be presented with an installation dialog. Cancel this
4. Navigate to the "all Java downloads here" page linked on this page
5. Look for the "Other Java Versions" link near the top of the content area
6. Look for the "Older versions:" area on this page; there is a link to "Archive Java Technology Products Download" on this page
7. Open this link
8. On this page is a bewildering list of options. Find "Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE)" in the left list
9. Under it is an entry called "JDK/JRE - 6"
10. Next to it you can select the appropriate version; ask in Technical Support for a working version and choose it here; select "Go" next to it once you've chosen
11. On the ensuing page choose the "JRE" option and NOT the "JDK" option; select "Download JRE", in other words
12. Choose your platform and agree to the terms, noting where you save the file
13. Run the downloaded file to install Java
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Still not working:
Head to Technical Support and ask for help. 🙂
