Video editing software

Does anyone know any decent free video editing programs. All I wanna do is cut off the beginning and end parts of a clip so it will fit on a CD-R. I've tried a few from download.com but none of them worked. I need one that will work with M4V files or somthing to convert M4V to somthing a program will recognize since none of the ones I tried would let me do anything with it.

iMovie, Wax, Windows Movie Maker...

Just to name a couple of free and low-cost ones. Something I've found with video editing packages... to get something with any decent quality at all, you'll need to spend a little cash.

I usually use Virtual Dub. It's fairly complex for freeware though. You may want to check out a guide on www.videohelp.com for indepth info on it. Go to: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Virtualdub to get the program and the plugins for MP4.
