Cyber-fraudsters have targeted members of the world's most popular online auction site, eBay.

The scam hinged on a website that mimicked the official eBay site, using a similar logo. The thieves emailed an unknown number of eBay's 55 million
customers during the past week, asking them to log on to the
bogus US-based website - ebayupdates.com - and re-submit their financial details, including ID and password.

The eBay service - which allows sellers to auction goods to the highest bidder - hosts about a million Australian visitors each month. It has posted a warning on its site.

A local representative, Kaye Dewar, could not say how many Australian members received the fraudulent emails.

Ms Dewar reiterated the need for customers "to be very vigilant about keeping details private. They should inform us immediately of any suspicious activity."

The eBay scam is similar to a false Sydney Opera House site which last year offered tickets for non-existent events.

The Federal Court issued an injunction last month to close that site.

That is scary Biggles.....I haven't heard about it, thanks for posting this. 😉 Rose
