I'm not surprised if you haven't, with our societies obsession with making everything so happy and fun for the holidays and what not. In another age, in the earliest folktales about Santa, Krampus was a companion to St. Nicholas and while ol' Santa brought gifts to the good little children......Krampus tormented the @#$! out of the naughty ones!

Really only prominent in eastern and northern European folklore today, the rather demonic looking Krampus (also known as Klaubauf, Père Fouettard, Schmutzli or Ruprecht) usually in early time periods appeared as the antithesis to Santa, with a long black beard, appearing ghastly and haggard with tattered robes and usually carrying a mace, scythe, switchblade or other assorted painful items. But the more prominent myths depict him resembling a full-on demon (as pictured below) with a long tongue. He was the one that originally brought the coal for children (of course they were actually burning coals that were placed in their beds but thats besides the point.)

So basically he would show up earlier in December (giving them time to change their ways) to beat the ever loving snot out of little bastard children with his various implements of punishment and if they were truly twisted little @#$!'s, they were kidnapped and never seen again....Kinda makes you reevaluate all of this goodwill stuff...nothing like the fear of pain to inspire cheer eh? "You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, I'm telling you why; KRAMPUS IS GONNA KICK YOUR @#$!ING @$$!!!!"

I'd like to thank my great grandfather Fritjaff for sharing these tales with me as a child...such a demented old @#$!...LOL

Honestly they really should bring him back with all the ungrateful little bastards that are being raised in the country today....I'm sure you've all see the YouTube video with the girl who gets a brand new sports car for Christmas and begins to cry and bitch that its the wrong color....they needs a serious ass whoopin for Christmas!

and that last woodcut has a pretty happy kid in the Krampus sack...

Yeah I know....kinda creepy right? He really shouldn't be that happy...he has a world of pain ahead of him...LOL

Well, actually I did hear of Krampus (that's exactly how we call him in Croatia). He comes with St. Nicholas, not santa, on 6th of december, and takes away naughty children. Also leaves twigs along with presents.

Stuff like that goes away with each generation, sad isen't it.I never knew bout that, and i dunno if my parents know buot that or even my grandparents but since i always *cough* whas a little angel in my younger years i never heard stories bout that.Think we entered the "goody goody" century or something.U don't hear sads stories only on the evening news, disney has it's happy movies and stories witch origanlly where mad and twisted ones and now u see stuff on tv where u can't slap kids cous "supernanny" tells u and all ,while a few years ago u got slapped silly if u misbehaved.Anyway back on topic, they shoul re-introduce things like that again.Btw if this whas for old saint Nick, is there something similar for Santa?? Come to think of it isen't that the Grinch??

i have heard of him, actually. and it got me interested in wanting to know more about him and his legend. thaks cheshire for bringing it up 🙂

my dad is the spitting image of santa AND hes born x-mas day so that makes my aunt(his twin) krampus.explains why im the only one who can put up with her.(im ALWAYS stoned around her)

I was thinking he'd make an Ideal antagonist; if not for The TTC, perhaps for like, some half-baked Christmas Special. JUST learnt about him after seeing a piece posted by a particular artist on D'Art. http://wagnerf.deviantart.com/art/krampus-71492923
Since then, I've kept Santa's little Imp in the back of my mind.
