I'm not surprised if you haven't, with our societies obsession with making everything so happy and fun for the holidays and what not. In another age, in the earliest folktales about Santa, Krampus was a companion to St. Nicholas and while ol' Santa brought gifts to the good little children......Krampus tormented the @#$! out of the naughty ones!
Really only prominent in eastern and northern European folklore today, the rather demonic looking Krampus (also known as Klaubauf, Père Fouettard, Schmutzli or Ruprecht) usually in early time periods appeared as the antithesis to Santa, with a long black beard, appearing ghastly and haggard with tattered robes and usually carrying a mace, scythe, switchblade or other assorted painful items. But the more prominent myths depict him resembling a full-on demon (as pictured below) with a long tongue. He was the one that originally brought the coal for children (of course they were actually burning coals that were placed in their beds but thats besides the point.)
So basically he would show up earlier in December (giving them time to change their ways) to beat the ever loving snot out of little bastard children with his various implements of punishment and if they were truly twisted little @#$!'s, they were kidnapped and never seen again....Kinda makes you reevaluate all of this goodwill stuff...nothing like the fear of pain to inspire cheer eh? "You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, I'm telling you why; KRAMPUS IS GONNA KICK YOUR @#$!ING @$$!!!!"
I'd like to thank my great grandfather Fritjaff for sharing these tales with me as a child...such a demented old @#$!...LOL
Honestly they really should bring him back with all the ungrateful little bastards that are being raised in the country today....I'm sure you've all see the YouTube video with the girl who gets a brand new sports car for Christmas and begins to cry and bitch that its the wrong color....they needs a serious ass whoopin for Christmas!
