What could be the cause of this video artefact (using Adobe Premiere)?

Hello everyone,

Aside from my first few titles, I've been using Adobe Premiere 6.5 to capture and edit my videos. Not the most up-to-date piece of software, I know, but it suits my needs. However, for the last several videos, I've noticed that the clips, as well as the still pictures I extract from them, show some odd video/image artefacts that I don't remember noticing in my earlier material.

The attached pictures show an example of this. These are JPEG versions of three BMP captures of the same frame, but captured from footage that's had different effects applied. They look very much the same as the BMPs. The first picture is from the original, unmodified footage. It's flat, not very sharp, but otherwise it's not too bad. Motion artefacts can be seen (mostly on the tickler's forearms), but that's not the problem I'm talking about. The second picture has had a few effects added (some levels, a bit of contrast and a tiny bit of hue and saturation). If you look closely, you can see a horizontal line pattern in the blue background. It almost has a subtle plaid pattern in some places. You can see it better if you enlarge the picture. I've never noticed this phenomenon until a few videos ago. It's most noticeable in areas where the color is relatively uniform, like backgrounds, and sometimes on the models' skin. In this particular picture, it's seen on the right upper arm of the tickler, as well as the elbow area of the ticklee's right arm. The third picture has had the same effects applied, plus some sharpness. It makes the picture look even more grainy, but I guess that's normal. Since the line artefacts are seen in the second pic, it seems sharpness is not responsible for the phenomenon. It only makes it worse.

Now, I don't know what causes the line artefact thing. It seems to happen when I encode a clip after applying effects (I tried re-encoding without any effects and it remains exactly the same). But is it due to a specific effect, or is it more general, like the compression codec? If it's the latter, why is it behaving differently from before, since I never tried to mess with such codecs until a couple days ago (without success)? Or is it some setting that I changed one day without knowing it? Another possibility is lighting conditions. Starting with my 30th tickling video, I've done all of my shoots in my Montreal apartment. It's rather poorly lit, and even with my lighting kits it can be rather dark. The picture quality seems to be better in better lit situations. Then again, I've shot some rather dark videos before I moved to Montreal, and while it does make the picture more grainy, I don't recall having that line artefact problem. I'm at a loss.

By the way, I don't think it makes any difference, but my camcorder is a Sony DCR-TRV900. It's the only camcorder I've ever used for my videos.

Any advice would be most welcome. Thank you in advance. And sorry for the length of post.

Francois
