What happend to mtv back in the day? it used to live up to the name music tv now there is barely any music on it. they hardly play videos all there are is stupid reality tv shows and shit like that i miss the old mtv. all that those shitty shows like the sureal life i don't want to watch that i want to watch music videos. i think back then they used to play music videos for hours.

The Real World happened. Killed MTV and has tried to take the rest of tv with it. It was the birth of modern "reality" tv.

Remember when Fuse used to make fun of MTV for it? Now Fuse is almost indistinguishable from MTV.

Surreal life is VH1, bro.

VH1 classic at least does videos much of the time. Including their version of Headbanger's Ball...Metal Mania. No vj. Just videos. Well, and commercials.

Le sigh.

I'm with you, bro. I grew up in the MTV generation, when it was an American cultural icon. I remember watching the very first video when the channel debuted (The Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star). I remember babysitting my nieces back in 83 and staying up all night, literally, just soaking in video after video. And it wasn't just Top 40 or popular metal. Back then, it was a vehicle for music video as art form. Bands and artists from all walks of music were creating intelligent mini-movies that captured our imaginations. Hell, even a band like Rush was making unbelievable videos. (Hell, I remember a time when the video for The Big Money was one of the most cutting-edge uses of the CGI of the time and one of the costliest videos ever made. From a band that had no interest in Top 40 popularity or selling records...proving it was for the art of it.)

I still remember when MTV started going downhill. And it was even before The Real World, although that was the end result. When J.J. Jackson, one of the original five VJ's, left and was replaced by that hack "Downtown" Julie Brown. And it's still a vivid uncomfotable memory when she pronounced Metallica met-a-LEES-a. She had no knowledge of music unless it was dance or R&B. And it was the signal that MTV was shifting its direction towards the money and the lowest common denominator. I remember saying to myself, "She's gonna kill this station." Within a year, the game shows started, prime viewing time was nothing but dance music and pop, and rock was relegated to the wee morning hours and specialty shows. "Yo MTV Raps" was on three times a day and the slope started and ran down quickly.

Now, MTV doesn't even deserve the name. It has nothing to do with music and everything to do with selling the crap from the advertisers who suck the collective dick of the lowest common demographic. It should change its name to the "Drama Queen Teenage Reality Channel" and let someone else kickstart a real music station that once again represents music as art and become a new American icon.

MTV, Ha! More like Empty V, because it is completely empty of any substance or entertainment. I haven't even tried to watch it in over 10 years.

I love those dating shows...Next and the stuff like that.

It doesn't have the irritating audience like Springer, and the delivery of their lines -I'm sorry, their true and personal thoughts- is as bad as any sleaze flick Joe Bob Briggs would be proud to introduce.

Get some friends, get some beer (or bourbon if you're like me), and MST3K the hell out it.

Good times. If you can stomach it (hence the alkeehol).

One of my first jobs was in a video arcade. For background music it played the local "album rock" station, which actually had a very limited playlist. The arcade had cable because FM reception was so putrid there. That meant, back in the days before stereo TV sound, that the MTV soundtrack, included in basic cable for the purpose of stereo reception, could be picked up on an ordinary FM radio. MTV had a much more interesting playlist then. That's because, like early TV stations in the 1950's, they were desperate for content. I remember seeing videos by not-quite-mainstream acts like David Van Tiegem, Talking Heads and Yoko Ono.

Oh well, there's always Youtube...

MTV is a hollow shell of what it once was..I loved watching mtv growing up.I watched the very 1st day it aired with its 10 video rotation..but it was great! These days for some reason they think they are a network station showing sitcoms , reality shows (who really gives a crap about 10 people living in a house anymore) etc etc. They seemed to forget what the point of the station is all about! Hell they are the reason "rock died"! SAD SAD THING
