What If?

What if fat was healthy because fat people had some cushioning and some reserve food stores to live on, and skinny people were said to be putting themselves at risk, and stigmatized for making this stupid health decision?

What if people went up to skinny girls in the street and said "Oh, you’d be beautiful if you’d just gain weight!"

Or "You’re thin, but you’re beautiful on the inside!" Or looked at me like I was in some way sick and disgusting?

What if all clothes below size 10 came in girly pastels, with the reasoning that small women are underdeveloped and childish?

What if they were called ‘minus sizes’?

What if thin people had to go to special stores to buy clothes, because none of the regular stores wanted to stock clothes for them, saying that they’re disgusting and their patrons wouldn’t want to look at them?

What if all models were a size 16 or above, but every once in a while you’d see a "minus size" model in a size 8 cut to make her look larger?

What if "too fat" wasn’t the greatest thing, because it was acknowledged to not be terribly healthy, but the models who were "too fat" still got all the modeling jobs, and they were told that they might want to lose a little weight but nobody took it seriously? And meantime "too fat" was infinitely better than "too skinny"?

What if thin people were depicted in the media as obsessed with exercise and starving themselves, and thus not sexually interested? And fat people were depicted as able to enjoy their food, and their lovers, with relish?

What if a TV character as popular as Friends’ Monica was depicted as once having been thin, not even unhealthily so, and she was the butt of jokes for that?

What if X percent of the American population was labeled "underweight"?

What if food commercials focused not on low-fat, but high in nutrients to gain weight?

What if people said "I don’t understand what’s wrong with skinny people. All they have to do is eat! It’s not that difficult. They must be pretty stupid not to figure that out."?

What if there were no labels saying "Low Fat" but instead they said "High Fat"?

What if magazines ran stories on "How to Maximize the Glory of your Curves"?

What if 7-year-old girls, copying their moms, asked their friends "Does this make me look too skinny?"

What if magazines ran bogus ads for weight gain powder? And the ads said "Mary gained 25 pounds in 8 weeks combining a high-nutrient diet, exercise to gain muscle mass, and Product X"? And they showed a picture of Mary wearing baggy clothes to make her look skinny and waifish, while in the "After" picture she was trim and tan? And women looked at Mary, who didn’t need to gain weight to begin with, and say "If she’s skinny, I must be a stick" and started gorging themselves?

What if thin people had to pay more for clothes and underwear and almost no pretty bras came in anything under a size 40?

What if there was an operation to enlarge the size of one’s stomach or inject fat under the skin?

What if middle-aged women were admired because they had put on some weight after age 30 and young women were simply ‘too thin’?

What if kids made jokes like "Your mama’s so thin, she blew away when I flapped my arms"?

What if people talked to thin people slowly on the assumption that they were like children?

What if thin people had to learn to be witty, because else they would be utterly ignored by the opposite sex?

What if studies showed that thin could also be healthy, not just fat, but the mass media only paid lip service to them?

This would be ridiculous.

Then why is the reverse still OK?

P.S. Please....this was intended to be a positive posting for our plus sized members. I beg of you not to turn it into an anti-bbw rant. Nearly all media already does that enough. Let us have one thread free from judgement.

Thank you.

if the roles were reversed, it would be good, because it will give lots of plus-sized women the self esteem needed to be happy. For too long the thin is in mentality made plus -sized women not feeling good about themselves, which is sad

besides, I want a woman with meat on her bones, not a paper thin one, who needs an X-ray machine to find some meat

My husband has been calling thinner models 'minus sized' for years, one of the reasons I fell for him :smilestar

I find ultra-skinny girls to be kind of disgusting, actually...

Thank you, Mimi, for posting that!

I took some of my friends to a casino to see our favorite comedian and on the way we somehow got on the topic of how long people can go without food. My two best friends are thin, but not dangerously thin, and both said they wouldn't be able to last a few days without food. In response, I said I go longer than they because I got more fat. They laughed because they didn't expect me to say that, but they agreed.

And living in Minnesota, winters get real cold and with my extra cushioning, I don't get as cold as some of my friends and family. It could be forty degrees and my friends would be complaining its cold and be wearing long sleeves. I'd be like forty is not that cold and be wearing short sleeves.

BBW rule! 😀

It makes one wonder how the skinny/ fat thing got started in the first place . My healthy weight is 175 for my size , but it goes up and down like a yoyo . A month ago I weighed 155 , I didn't look good and I didn't feel good . My metabolism is always on high gear and it worries me . One thing always to remember is that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and hopefully that beauty isn't material but from the heart .

I'm "in between" myself but what Strider said, I hear from a LOT of my guy friends--I mean what's fun about huggling a skeleton, I'm afraid to break them!
Curves are sexy!

XOXO

Well, for us women they always say it started with the model Twiggy. Up until then women built like Marilyn Monroe who I believe was a size 14 was the preference.

Bravo!!!!!!!

:bowing: :bowing: :bowing: :bowing: :bowing:

Thank you for posting this. If you can get it to me in a word document, that would be great!

Growing up with Twiggy as the national icon of beauty, I've been harrassed and beaten down about my weight all of my life. Even my parents who were both heavy and fed me poorly humiliated me constantly. Now, I'm bigger than I've even been and have never had so much self-confidence and self-esteem! Yes folks, you read that right, my self-confidence and self-esteem have never been better. I simply refuse to allow others to control me and my weight has been an easy target. The only difference is I wear my issues on the outside-there are people who have chronic addictions that avoid the radar because they can hide them. The obese cannot hide their issues so society makes them easy targets.

I intend to lose as much weight as possible in order to live longer and be with my future grandkids. But I am NOT suscribing to society's definition of beauty, health, or fitness. I'm too old to look like Hollywood and I don't find it attractive anyway. Most stars look great until they become entrenched in the lifestyle-then they starve themselves until the media says they look good. When it goes too far the media beats up on them for being too thin. Look at Lindsey Lohan, Kelly Clarkson, and now Carrie Underwood. Those women had beautiful bodies to start with, now all three of them look like skeletons with no hips, no butts, no curves--nothing! And my goodness, how much does Nicole Ritchie weigh-about 80 lbs?? She had a great looking body before she hit Hollywood-now she's a walking skeleton!

And for those who think all of the ills of society and the high cost of insurance is because of obese people, think about this-there are lots of skinny people in the doctor's office, the hospital, and the cemetary so it's not just the fat folks that are getting sick. Just another BS media tactic to turn society against us.

From a fellow "chunk"....

Once they get done driving smokers into extinction, we're next folks. Call me paranoid, but that's what I think. "Being fat" will be the next intolerance.

Bella, my turn was actually "undersized", because "minus-sized" sounded too much like Midas-sized from the muffler commercial!

Real women, like men (I think some men forget this), come in all shapes and sizes. I happen to be married to a pretty BBW with a fun sense of humor and in general I adore big gals, but at the end of the day, what is inside with everybody is what counts. If I enjoy somebody's company, how much they weigh is meaningless.

This is a great thread Mimi, thanks!

Newsflash - we're already more hated then smokers. Which makes no sense. Smoking is disgusting and it's not only suicide, but mass murder since 2nd hand smoke kills too. But my fat doesn't hurt anyone but me - unless I trip and fall on a Smurf Village. 😛

True. She went about 150 I beleive.

XOXO

Its time for the shallow guy to check in. 😎 while im not a fan of stick figured women, i do like one thats in pretty decent shape. nothing gets me steamier than a hard bodied woman! :woot: of course, she must have the personality to match also.

Actually Maniac, I don't find this to be shallow at all. Just honest, which is refreshing. Everybody has preferences, my hubby is no more shallow or superficial than you for his love of thicker girls with round baby faces (think Belinda Carlisle and Janet Jackson in the '80's). Frankly I prefer a strong and fit woman myself-just one with curves as fine as her muscles and a penchant for actually digesting her meals 🙄 . I could be wrong, but I don't think most non-minus women are annoyed by men who prefer healthy athletic ladies who keep themselves trim but don't look like zombies; rather, it's the way many folks seem to idolize extremely thin women who aren't in shape-no muscle tone, sunken cheeks (all four of them), tiny dog who eats more than they do, etc, that make us shake our heads. I admire and aspire to be a luscious hardbody and I think they're hot. But 95 lb adult women who smoke instead of eating and can't open toothpaste by themselves yet are considered attractive bug me :disgust: .

in regards to something that Kis said..i used to be called twiggy in grade school and hated it..it wasn't always fun being the skinny girl either..especially back when thin was not in..it can be just as hurtful to be called stick legs as it can to be called something for the bigger people..at least to me it was..skinny used to be such a dirty word to me..made me so self conscious...and in highschool as a majorette, i was the littlest..the band director was always after me to gain weight..but then he would point out some of the larger majorettes and say "You should lose some of that weight and give it to Melanie" and needless to say they didn't exactly like me..

gaining weight isn't as easy for some girls like some people think. my best friend is super skinny. she stands at about 5'5 and weighs 110 and that's on a good day. some people have told her that she needs to gain weight. even her doctor has encouraged it, but she has a high metabolism and can eat more food than anyone else I know. i joke with her, telling her she's got a bottomless pit for a stomach.

plus, she's lactose intolerant and can't have breads or pastas because her body can't break it properly. so it's no wonder she's so skinny. but people don't see that.

for people who don't understand think it's so simple, black and white. eat to gain weight, exercise to lose it. but there are other factors too. and it's not that easy.

hollywood needs to lose it's 'thin is in' and at least start encouraging healthy sizes. at least, Dove soap is doing something. i love those commericals, using real women, with real curves. now that's sending a positive message to young girls.

just my take

Boys, ages 16 and under *mentally and in age* prefer toothpick women or larger woman one over the other. Men, aged over 16 *Mentally and in age* prefer beauty, both outer and inner size or lack thereof doesn't factor in. I admit until I was about 16 to being one of the drones who only liked toothpick girls. Now I get to know people. And from my perspective I've run across alot of nice skinny girls, and alot of snobby bitchy fat girls, as well as vice versa.

And really why do we care about what the media thinks? Does the media know us? Nope. Have they ever even seen or met us? Nope. Then why worry about it? Why don't we just worry about what the person staring back at us in the mirror every morning thinks of us, because when all is said and done, when all the cards are laid on the table, one thing remains true. From day one to day end, there's only one person in our lives that was there the hole time. And that is us. The one person that stares at you every morning in the mirror. Parents and siblings die, lovers come and go one way or another, same with friends. That one face staring at you in the mirror every morning is the only constant. You make that person happy your life will be easier and better off than if you continue worrying about what the new flavor of the month on the covers of all the celeb mags think of you, or what the idiots writing for those mags think of you.

Just my take, but again I'm just a 29 year old handicapped person who was never supposed to be able to do anything with his life according to 'others'. What the hell do I know?

Hmmm...fresh meat...😉 Welcome!
Best line ever from cheesy movie, and I hope I get the name of the movie right. :ermm:

Hooray for the women who aren't ashamed of themselves! I have always found skinny women nice to look at, but seldom fun to hold. I enjoy a "full" embrace. I can't get that if my arms are half empty. I'm not knocking anyone, just stating my preference.

Fat or thin, I'm still going to shrink to 5'0 someday.

I love the people who always make fun of other who are fat, then you see them a few years later, and wham, they're like 40-50 pounds heavier. And you're just like, "I told you so."
