What is the time limit to respond to posts?

I have just lost a lot of work in responding to a particular thread when separating paragraphs I wanted to talk about. When I was finished and pressed the button to post a reply I had to log back into the forums and all the work was lost and time wasted.

Just how much time do we have to respond to posts before we are automatically logged off?

HDS will probably know exactly, but I would guess around an hour, which is how long the forum hangs onto your ID.

Thats what I was thinking, I had a wee look on some other forums and that seems to be what its set to, like 3600 seconds or something

*awaits the word of the wise one in the shadows*

I was working on it for about twenty minutes, got the post the way I wanted it, them the rug got pulled when I hit the reply button. It's not all that big of a deal as I don't usually take that much time to reply.

I was just wondering, that's all. I'll keep better tabs on the time I use to reply and if it happens again I can give you something better to work with.

It's one hour. Posting a reply is just the same as being 'active' on the forum.

If I know that my reply might take longer then an hour, I just hit "Preview Post" and it'll update the time just as if I were to click on a new thread.

Basically; if I start a thread at 6:28 and it's 7:25, I only have 3 more minutes before it boots me. So, I hit Preview Post at 7:26 and then I'll have untill 8:26.

It's possible that your internet connection timed out. If this happens sometimes you can still get cached information by just backing up.

Sometimes it helps to simply just copy it to clipboard while composing. (CTRL-C)

To echo and expand on Bohemianne's idea...

If I'm composing long posts, messages or emails, I'll either copy & paste them into Word or Notepad or simply compose them using either of those two programs in the first place.

Create file, save, type for a bit, save again, rinse and repeat.

Saves a lot of :panic: in the end, I find. 🙂

Multiple items limit this. There us a security token set when you browse that has a hard limit of 3 hours. That doesn't care if you've been active: if you were typing a post for three hours and never post-previewed that post you will not be able to make it, even if you were active elsewhere during that time. Apache (the webserver) has a limit of 300 seconds before it drops the connection but that has no effect on posting. What you're hitting is the vBulletin session timeout. It occurs every hour, as others reported, if you did nothing during that time.

I'm with Jo, Derek. If you are going at it a while copy the whole thing, or preview it for good measure. Should you forget and click post and it goes to the log in, hit the back button on your browser, as that takes you back to your work "most" of the time. I've lost stuff to, but more often than not, it brings me back. Don't feel bad, because another Vbull forum I post too has a stupidly short timeout of 10-20 minutes. It's aggravating like grabbing for the Fruity Pebbles only to realize you have no milk. 😛

^I like your idea.^

What!! How can you people spend 1 hour responding to a thread on the Tickling Media Forum?!

In that time, Milagros would increased his post count by approximately 1000,

Uh, oh. I better post this reply quick. It's been almost 1 minutes so far 😱
