The above were all people(and maybe afew bots) browsing the forum at roughly 3:30 a.m.(Eastern time), January 6th, 2007 A.D. The vast majority of them will never post a single sentence to the board, but I still wonder about the "Why?" behind each screen-name.

Does anyone else find the variety of nom-de-plumeage on the Interweb amazing and imaginative?

Any of the above people, or anyone at all who would like to share how they chose their screen-name?

I'm all ears! :super_hap

I've already done this, but since my name is actually in that list you posted, I'll do it again.

Theres nothing special to my SN. When I saw the movie Van Helsing, I was impressed by Richard Roxburgh's portrayal of Count Dracula; so much so that I changed my SN to what is is now and have drawn my own avatar to match. This is not my original registered name, and I may yet change it again.

well im irish, im a girl lol and im 5 ft, well 4'11 but who is counting haha

Forgive me if it's a trite topic. I find names fascinating. Just browsing the list of current users always gives one a good idea of just what a wide variety of souls become members of a tickle forum.

I mean, some sound funny, others scary, some poetic, others seemingly random series of numbers. I wonder about all of them. Are some refernces to characters, like with Vladislaus Dracula? Others born of a sense of national pride, like with irishgirl5? Still others based on favorite songs, or just abbreviations to people's real-world names?

Some are definately better than others(for me). I love in particular from the list above:

bananadude
Black & Crimson
e_piphan_y
Hazza

Ooo! Look!

Mere minutes later, and it's a whole different list of people:

Well if you must know......

My name....is my alter ego, a timeless, confusing, random persona.

And if you have a problem with it...maybe i should just rip you a new one right now....i'm quite vicious towards the ignorant.

Nothing for you to apologize for; I understand what you mean. I'm just saying that I've already explained it like.....hmm....at least four times.

My nickname reflects my main taste/hobby, tickling. In English, Tickler means "Cosquillero" in Spanish. I said it many time ago, but as Vlad said, i tell you again. However my nickname isn't unique, i've seen it a lot of times, include in my country, several persons have it. Maybe it's nice nickname, i don't know.

I remember that I tried to use other names but that they had already been taken, so I just came up with The Team.

Its not got any real reason behind why I chose it, just that it was not taken already and that I couldnt think of anything else at the time.

Sometimes nothing, sometimes a lot. When I registered to TTC the Allman Brothers song Whipping Post was playing in the backround. Good song so I removed post and put the better sounding boy in the name. I never would have used it had that song not been playing on the radio. I think it depends a lot on people's moods sometimes or backround. An imaginative person might use a movie character's name like General Grievous or Balrog or perhaps something that sounds cool like Lucifer or Archangel. Someone else that is not looking to express themselves might just put their own name with numbers after it to make it different that the name that someone already has. I always thought Boss Hogg would be a cool name but too late now! :content:

I'll be...

See, I was gonna guess that you might be a fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and went with a song title from the movie.

Love that lil' avatar, regardless!

"Boss Hog" would indeed be a cool moniker, Whipping Boy! Or howzabout "Wonder Warthog"(an old underground comic by the guy that created The Fabulous Furry Freak Bro's strip. Or "Fat Freddy", for that matter! Actually, I think I might have seen those before on TMF.

How easy is it to change one's name, after they've established it on a forum such as this one? Do you have to get with the Mods, or is there a simple way to do it via one's UserCP? Do you wind up losing all your old posts, etc?
Just curious. I'm sticking with the sorta doofy Rick Tibbler, which is of course just a bastardization of rib-tickler...

Anyway, thanks to all who humored me with answers! :content:

Good thing it wasn't "Long Tall Sally" playing in the background, eh? 😉

Mine is quite simple: University of Iowa graduate (hawkeye)...live in Kentucky (ky)....put them together and you get my affliations and mindset...KY Hawkeye

Now see! I'm glad you cleared that up for me. What you described is exactly what i thought on reading your name for the first time. Later, this horrible, horrible image of "Alan Alda and personal lubricant" flashed in some deep recess of the brain, and I am now scarred for life because of a warped imagination. :unwell:

Thought you were american? 😀

Myself and a few of my mates actually made up online personas for ourselves, for filling out online forms when we didn't want to be inundated with spam. My names was John Sebastian Byrne III. So I made up and address, email and a short history (I was a professor of paranormal studies at Oxford! 😀 ), and I still fill out stuff with those details. Sad really, now that I think about it!

We don't change names unless the name is offensive (i.e. a racial slur or somesuch), as a rule. Changing names tends to confuse people who are used to seeing the old name.

What if somebody came up with a boffo name, the name they should have thought of when they first joined, and wanted desperately to be that particular name. Wouldja let `em, then?

Sorry if I'm being pesky with the questions...

It's just that, that perfect name might hit me one day, and I'd like to think I'd have that option. Maybe I could put some kind of "The Poster Formerly Known As" disclaimer in my profile for clarity?

And by-the-by: HisDivineShadow is a great screen-name. How'd you come by it? Anime? Video game? Both? It'd make a great band-name...

Well, Vlad had a different name when he joined here, he were called "Celtic Emperor", if i'm not wrong. You can ask to him what he did to change his nickname.

I wonder if I chose Boss Hogg as a screen name if i'd be obligated to have an avatar of either Sorrell Booke or Burt Reynolds? Hey! How about Uncle Jesse as a screen name? Then you can have Willie Nelson as your avatar! Whoo man! I hope i'm as cool as Willie at age 74...still smokin' that wacky tobacky and rock and rollin! :super_hap

As incredible as the great Willie Nelson is, I'd have to roll with the Denver Pyle-style Uncle Jesse for an avatar. Not necessarily from this particular picture. I just used it for the always lovely shot of Daisy from the TV show. Denver's the big lug in the middle...

You can't keep your eyes off of Daisy, can you? 😉
