Does that ever bug you or is it just me being picky? For example, when someone says, "It's tickles me that."When they mean "It makes me laugh" or "finds it very amusing". Or if you have a cough and someone asks is it a "tickly cough". A tickly cough-meaning a REALLY irritating cough that doesn't seem to want to stop and you seem to cough for no apparent reason.

Does anyone else know of any other phrases where the word tickle is used to mean something completely different?

Being 'tickled pink' about something means to be really pleased about it, and if someone were to describe something as a 'ticklish' situation it means that it's a delicate situation (though that last one is generally not used very much in modern times 😛 )

It bugs me too, haha. A pet peeve is when weathermen refer to the temperature as "tickling" 40 degrees or whatever. I find the term "tickling the ivories" for piano playing amusing, though, because it's descriptive 😉

Forgot about 'tickling the ivories' 🙂

Ah, how those early internet searches on Yahoo for 'tickling' bring back memories of that phrase....

Well good-glad I'm not the only one.lol.Ohh yeah "tickling the ivories"...that amuses me too.But makes me think of someone playing your ribs like a piano.heehee 😉

When people use the word tickle in a way that doesn't mean to tickle someone I think it is weird haha. Like if someone says, "I was tickled pink about that." I just think to myself, "who talks like that?"

I know I'm the minority and their the majority, but it just sounds weird to me.

It sounds weird to me too-so you're not alone there 🙂

It is funny the connotations and usages of the word. I doubt many people who come here (the board) would openly use the word 'tickle' in another sense unrelated to the actual practice of tickling... because we find the word 'tickle' to special just to be abused and bounded about in trivial conversation like its not important! Besides, I know I personally would be uneasy using it in public - just because I have a secret in interest in it.

Its very similar to the use of the word 'ticklish'... which is a British expression (i think) for something that's difficult or hard to do/contemplate. 'A ticklish situation'... I've read that phrase many times in my history books - and in none of them has it related to tf03 being tied down and feathered!! (Sorry for picking on you, tf03 - no hard feelings! lol).

Just my thoughts.

Heehee Fen's got it---I can't even SAY the "t" word in ANY form without blushing---sometimes even hearing it does it, in whatever context😱 But yea, it drives me to distraction too😛

Yeah you got it in one there Fen.....I certainly can't use the "t" word openly in public.

Haha trust you to say that :tounge:

Well, I always was the intelligent one! lol! (j/k). Maybe its the case with us... but were all of the same age group. Other, more wiser individuals may have different views or be less embaressed - I dunno.

haha....but it's true-you were the geek...I mean the more intelligent one out of the two of us.lol.

Or maybe it's the fact that we have this fetish we just get embarrassed about saying it......For example, when I came out to both of my mates they said the "t" word no bother....I think Emily even used it twice in the same sentence.I can write it in an email or a text message (coz that's how I came out) but saying it aloud seems so much harder for some reason. 😱 But I think if push came to shove, being the lee that I am, if Anna asked me face to face, and the situation was right,"what do you want me to do?" I'd probably say it and ask her to tickle me if I knew for sure she was gonna get me.....but I think Karen's "training" has helped with that. 😱 😉

I'm over 30 but I still blush upon even hearing the T-word, much less saying it 😱

So it happens to the best of us then 😱 hehe

I admit I tend to choose not to say it aloud myself as well.

Meanwhile I'm distracted by the appealingly surprising notion of MistressValerie blushing. But that's because I'm perpetually in helpless thrall to my crushes.
