Where is the "For You Bleeding Hearts... - in the General Discussion Forum" thread?

Anyone know what happened to this thread? I was away two days after just breaking some seriously impressive, diplomatic ground, and I can't get in to see what was added. Was it pulled for some reason?

Yes. For the usual reasons. Firefighting.

Awwwwwww........just as me and Tron were getting all snuggly too. So much for a victory in diplomacy. 🙁 Could'nt the thread have just been locked or particular posts removed?

Once too many...

That had been done several times already. When we yell "enough" and no one listens, we move on to the next phase of moderation.

I have to respectfully say that I think deleting the entire thread was way too nanny-stateish Q. If any one post was slanderous it could have been aced and if the thread was just meandering around in acrimonious circles it could have been locked. With the posting rate on this forum it would have sunk without trace in hours and never could have been brought back to page 1 again, because it could'nt have been posted on any more.

That would have been a much better solution in my opinion. As threads go, it was quite productive until the "firefighting" started; with quite a lot of political discussion. At least by having it locked people like me who wanted to see the last responses could have read them, before it sank. Of course I'm not a moderator and almost certainly never will be, so my opinion on this counts for nothing. Nevertheless, I hope it's taken notice of.

Sometimes the effort to edit a GenDis thread back into shape is not worth it.

We've come to learn that usually after we clean them up, less then an hour later the same people have pissed in it again, negating the work. It's a fun game that chews up staff time, on material that doesn't even touch on tickling, the base reason for the forum.

So why waste time? You've taught us that we shouldn't. We fix it once, then when it goes bad again I deam it broken, and it leaves.

Ok, so I lied. This is my last word.

I know how valuable mod time is Myr. I also know well that it's totally volunteered and done for the well-being of the community as a whole. I accept everything you said above as being true. I still don't see why the thread could'nt have been simply locked instead of deleted though. Locking it would have had exactly the same effect from a modding point of view. It would have achieved all you said you wanted to above, without stopping us reading it.

But heck, it's done now. I appreciate why you guys zapped it, I just differ on how I would have done it. Thanks for taking the trouble to keep flames out; it is appreciated.

You are correct, locking the threads would be a better option in most cases, as it would preserve the material that was of value. I'll see if that is possible in more cases in the future.

One reason for the pulls over locks is that the threads are often a mess that need to be edited before they could be returned and locked. And after you've done it once or twice to just try and keep the thread open, a certain level of tiredness sets in. I often say bin the damned thing, and be done with it to save staff time.

Note, a lot of this applies only to GenDis, where I keep things on a lot shorter leash regarding use of staff time. As you have seen, we often go to great lengths to keep tickling threads open, or readable, when there are issues in them.

I appreciate your openess Myr, thanks for listening.

The Thread Verged On ..

Intelligence. So it had to go. 🙂

Actually a few austrophiles who couldn't make an intelligent presentation if their life depended on it got involved.

I went to Indy for 3 days and the mean people must have taken over...

Did the "The Troops Need" thread get whacked as well? I was away for three days myself and can't get access to it from my e-mail notification.

Myr, can you shed any light at all?

How the hell can a thread about sending some essential items to the boys in the Gulf, degrade into mud-slinging? Encroy-bloody-able! Still, at least it makes me seem positivley mild-mannered by comparison. 😀
