While we're at it let's legalize marriages

In another thread we have been discussing legalizing prostitution and it got me to thinking about legal marriages. There is a push on to get states to start recognizing same sex marriages as legal.

I say, "Why stop there?" Let's legalize polygamous marriages.

Let's legalize marriages between human and animal. No really, I'm serious. I can marry my dog and cat and then claim them as dependents on my taxes and force my employer to offer vetrinarian medical coverage for them.

Next, I think I'll marry my car.

Okay, let's chat about same sex marriages, rather than get into dogs and cats and cars, since those others don't have the benefit of legal standing that equals a humans. There are a few states that recognize some form of same sex marriage/partnership/etc. at least in terms of legal matters and health benefits and such. You didn't really make your position clear on the matter and had your tongue planted so firmly in your cheek that the thread kind of meandered a bit...lol.

Polygamous marriages had some standing in Utah for quite some period of time I believe...not sure where they are at the present time on the issue though.

I think same sex marriages should be recognized. The legal ramifications make sense, and they probably won't do nearly as badly as we heteros have done in the last century....

Polygamy? Any man who feels able to handle multiple wives for a period of decades...I say let 'em try. Just don't let them be able to divorce for at LEAST 20 years. A decent sentence for most crimes.... Q

Legal recognition of same sex relationships? Why not. It's blatant discrimination not to and the ONLY reason not to do it, is that Bible says it's evil. (As is not confining yourself from your community for a period of time when you have a wet dream, and not burning an ox on Sundays if you are a person of land.)

As for legal recognition of human-animal relationships I'm assuming padre, that you're taking the piss. It doesn't follow the same logic as same sex relationships and it's daft to suggest it does. Animals have no way of verbally communicating assent of enjoyment even if they DID feel both. (As Joby would say...ICKY ICKY BLERGH!!!)

And polygamy? I'd say yes to that as well if all parties involved were happy, consenting and adult enough to understand the situation. It's not a situation I'd feel happy in indulging in myself, but I would'nt discriminate against those who do. Hell, there are people on this forum who've done that very thing. It'd also have to apply to women having more than one "husband" too though. That's something the Mormon Church never allowed and to my knowledge, no Polygamous society ever did.

The main Mormon Church has now abandoned polygamy as a practice, although a newer splinter group of it, still practices it.

my best friend is gay and because of that I have ended up with quite a few gay friends. it seems ridiculous to me that a loving couple planning to spend their lives together don’t have the same rights a drunk man and woman in Vegas would.

if you really care about it, you can join the Human Rights Campaign. http://www.hrc.org/ and let your law makers know how you feel.

Despite my somewhat conservative view of things I have no problem with same sex marriages. When it comes to consenting adults I basically don't want the goverment down my pants or anyone elses telling me or them what to do. The goverment has obligations to regulate certain things to protect its citizenry but in this regard I feel it has no right. I will now return to the marmalade...excuse me humor forum.😀

PS BigJim, Marry 20 orphans and you could solve the in-law problem.

Homophobia runs rampant throughout my quaint lil village, although I don't particurarly give a flying...you know...what people do as lifestyle choices, and I support it, but I wouldnt support it publically because of certain bigots

Homosexual marriages are already legal in many European countries, like Netherlands and Germany. They have almost the same rights as heterosexual couples, but of course they can't get maried in the church. However, many priests hold an official blessing ceremony for the newly-wed couple. Homosexuals can be faithful Christians, too, you know...

Incidentally, a high-ranked member of the city council in my hometown Munich married another homosexual 2 years ago, and the Mayor gave a big receptionfor them, just like at the marriage of any other (heterosexual) city council member.
