Why do I dream of Decrepit Houses?

Last night I dreamed about a really decrepit old house. This is a recurring setting for my dreams. I could smell the mildew on the books, the mold growing in the sinks under neglected piles of dishes. It was cold, poorly heated if at all, poorly lit. Winding stairs led down to the basement, I could vividly feel the cinder blocks of the walls, I noticed the rust spots on the big water heater.

In these dreams, there's often plastic tarps covering doorways or wall sections. Nothing much really happened in this dream, except her husband (probably dead by now) kept appearing and vanishing each time I thought of him, but I don't think that part means anything.

These aren't picturesque haunted mansions, they're wet, dank, musty homes, often with sections of wall rotted away. This one was an older house, pre-WW2; usually they're newer tract houses from the 60s or 70s.

Last night's dream was different- the dream is typically the house I grew up in, but in total decay. This was a friend's house, an elderly lady who passed away over ten years ago; the house was near the shore, I could smell and feel the ocean breeze outside. Paint was peeling around the windows and door frame, all the rooms were filled with clutter (old books, boxes, furniture, empty glass cups; old-style glass in blue and green) She was showing me around the place, but I don't remember anything she said.

In these dreams there's ALWAYS water damage; I mean BAD water damage, sometimes massive, where the whole roof will be full of holes, or the entire outside wall falling off.

This house was huge and confusing, with way too many rooms.

Here's another odd thing; it was on a familiar dream-street, a street where other dreams have taken place. There's a convenience store a few blocks down the road; I've parked there in other dreams (to read a map!) but never gone inside. There's a consistent geography to my dream-world that I've actually mapped out on paper.

Think this means anything about my psyche? Sorry for the wordy description, I wanted to show how unbelievably vivid these dreams are every time.

Vellly interesting. Vye do you hate your mother?

I kid. I don't buy into typical dream theory, where "decrepit house=some issue or other", and I myself have had dreams of a similar sort, though never with as much recurrence as yours. May you have luck with this puzzler, wherever it leads you, Slaver123.

I find that with recurring dreams..if i can somehow in the dream, resolve the issue or solve the problem..i quit having that dream..for example..i've dreamt over and over about our burglar alarm lights going haywire in the middle of the night..i wake up hubby and say i think someone's in the house..then i wake up..but not really..i'm still in the dream..and those lights are going out of control..we know someone's in the house..we can hear them moving around..i always end up waking up for real, scared out of my wits..the last time i ever had that dream..i hit the police button on the burglar alarm system..problem solved..never had that dream again..

However i do still have other recurring dreams..one about my mom being alive..and her death being a mistake..and sometimes dad is alive as well..i hate this dream..and am not sure how to end it..

Good luck..most of the time..dreams are just that..dreams..

Wish I knew what to tell you, Izzy. (virtual hug)

Hey! Get outta my house! 🙂

Seriously, that imagery must be pretty disturbing. My semi-educated guess is that it has to do with wanting to move on from your past, probably due to painful feelings, or dissatisfaction. (I accept all major kinds of insurance!)

Your elderly friend's husband?

Here's one I haven't had in a while; in real life my Mom passed away in the late 80s- in the nightmare it's present-day, she's still alive but still sick and I have neglected to visit her in the hospital for 20 years!!! Used to have this one a lot.

Reocurring dreams are always something I find fascinating, so I decided to do some extensive (read: scant) research for you:

I believe 'EDI RAMONE' has the most helpful advice here ...

This site, however, may be more along the lines of what you're looking for:

http://www.sapphiredreaminterpretation.com/importantsymbols.html

To summarize, it says that the house most often represents the self in dreams, and that the coniditon of the house is therefore reflective of how one feels about themselves. Do you feel as though your situation in life is deteriorating or that you've seen better days? That'd be my layman's analysis for you.

Hope that helps.

Depends on who you ask... I have seen better days, but I like who I am now more than the "me" from those better days. My life WAS like those shattered wrecks of old houses, but I cobbled a new life together from the wreckage, and I'm pushing forwards.

I have good and bad memories about real houses; bad memories from my old house cause of the circumstances under which I had to leave it (ugly situation)

...and GOOD memories about my best friend's house. His family's place WAS almost a ruin; mold growing on unwashed dishes in the sink, mice sneaking around behind furniture, no central heat, piles of boxes and stuff, a carpeting of newspapers; I even helped him dig space out of the debris and put walls up in the attic to make rooms; I LOVED that house!!! I'm serious, these people were the worst pack-rats I'd ever met, and I instantly hit it off with them. (I'm not nearly that bad a pack rat myself)

Another recurring theme in my dreams is discovering extra rooms in my place; but I know the meaning of that dream, I wish I had the extra rooms for real...
