Why do ("normal") people tickle each other?

Ok, this kind of follows on from the "are we weird" thread, and I know it seems like a stupid question, but indulge me. Why do people who don't have tickling fetishes tickle each other? I know it's a form of flirting, but why should it be? And I expect to get a lot of answers saying something along the lines of "it's just fun", but why is it fun?
To put the question another way, does anyone know someone who especially likes to tickle people even though they don't appear to have a tickling fetish? Why do you think they do it?

I knew a kid a while back who seemed to LOVE to tickle girls. He tickled them all the time, at least whenever I saw him. But I know he didn't have a tickling fetish. Plainly...I'd say he used it a lot to be flirtatious and a little bit annoying at the same time, grabbing their sides as he walked by.

Remember, you don't have to have a fetish for tickling to like to do it. We just like it genuinely.

There are several answers to you're question, but it is important to remember that everyone has their own thoughts.

From a sociological standpoint there are two issues which come to my mind. These apply to both "fetishist" and non "fetishist"

1. As part of human nature, humans like control and power. Whether people know it or not the person on the receiving end is getting dominated in a way by the ler. Thus providing pleasure for the ler and hopefully for the lee as well.

2. We've learned to accept laughter as proof of happiness and innocence. I'm not quite sure why, but many times innocence is preferred. When I stated that it was learned, I am really putting emphasis that past experiences have a great deal to do with laughter means happiness and happiness is good.

These are just my own thoughts on the reasoning behind the endurance of tickling as an accepted concept. If you are still interested in the subject I advise that you look into sociology as the science holds many answers.

Being a "normal" (as you call it) person myself who does not have this tickling fetish, I can honestly say in truth that tickling is just something that happens in the moment. Theres nothing really deep, thoughtful, or meaningful about it necessarily, and its not nearly as complicated as a fetishist might make it or ponder on it.

Its just an act that happens as a tease to someone else, a gesture of friendly happiness and innocence. The intent isn't to make them laugh more than it is the simple act of teasing them, whether they deserve it or not. Its a way of getting back at someone in a harmless, almost rough-house sort of way. Its one of those physical last resorts, sort of like the gentle nudge, poke, or slap on the hand.

The basic premise of tickling is the same for fetishists and non-fetishists alike, and like Kunoke said at the end of his post, you don't have to have a fetish to like tickling (I'm an example of that), its just that with a fetishist, its more likely to be premeditated in execution, if at all possible.

This isn't to say of course than a non-fetishist couldn't have the same level of forethought as a fetishist would on the subject or if the opportunity to tickle someone came about. And thats just a given without me having to tell you.

Hmmmm.... Eeenteresting. I guess i'll try and elaborate on the points tkpatience made.

welledy welledy welledy... Well, we do like to laugh yes? If we are male and straight, seeing a woman laugh with genuine pleasure or amusement is generally a clear cut sign that she wants you to keep paying attention to her. Hearing laughter is instictually pleasing to us; its inherent in a human's social communicative repetoire. Studies done on tribes in south america and other parts who had previously had almost no contect with the modern world, showed that a big grin meant to them the same thing it does to us: enjoyment. So, safe to say, one reason we all enjoy tickling people to one degree or another is because, at a basic level, we like hearing people laugh.

Also, because we are 'social animals' if you like, dominance and submissiveness are inherent in our blood; all humans societies have hierarchies of one form or another. Thus for many, even if they're not fetishists, a buzz is got from feeling 'higher up in the chain'. The proportion of dominant males and females in sexual fetishes, and in general positions in society, suggests that being 'dominating' is more instinctually appealing (in general) to men, and that women find, once again not exclusively but in a general trend, more pleasure from the reverse role. But that's a bit of a tangent. Point is, if your stronger than someone, have greater strength in numbers (getting someone else to hold the lee down etc), have mechanical power over them (chains, ropes, bonds... although this one is more exclusive to the fetishists, in the case of tickling) and so on, and are able to control them, and in the case of tickling often have them ask you to stop, it gives an instictual, buzzing sense of being the master, even if your not consciously aware of the 'dominant-submissive' relationship. Hence another reason why many non fetishists enjoy tickling; it empowers.

Phew. Lets see.... anything else... Well, we all do like to touch each other. It gives us a feeling of connection. Even straight men seem to genuinely enjoy touching one another, in spite of the homosexual prejudices inherent in our modern world, as is shown by their behaviour when drunk, when said social walls are less restraining (lots of hugging, patting, hand to hand contact etc.) and also from examples of less homophobic societies, like ancient greece or rome, or even modern europe where straight men often kiss without thinking anything of it. This implies that we instictually just *like* human touch, regardless of what gender or orientation its from. This could be another reason why we enjoy tickling; we take pleasure from being in friendly physical contact with any other person, without anything sexual necessarily being implied.

There may of course be something chemical involved, in terms of hormones and such, but that is not an area in which I am magnificently knoledgeable, so I'll steer well clear. Anyhoo, hope that was helpful.

See ya.

Yes. Look both ways before you cross the street, if you catch my drift.

Well my partner doesn't have a tickling fetish at all, but he would tickle me because he said he liked to hear me laugh and found it amusing he could get such a reaction just from wiggling one finger in my direction.
