Its a General question why do women paint your toes?

i started painting my toenails last summer, a bit after joining this forum.. i was under the misconception that painted toenails would look gawdy, but wow was i wrong.. i love the look.. much better than plain old nails to me.. my favorite color of choice is purple, although i have a bright red that i really should try soon.. also want some midnight blue..

same reason we paint our nails

It's decoration. Like jewelry. Also, they'll be more noticeable.
I don't remember a time when I didn't paint them. And my toes are painted fire engine red 24/7.

XOXO

If you get right down to it, they do it for the same reason that they style their hair and wear flattering clothes: it makes them look prettier in the eyes of whichever gender they're trying to attract.

It's amazing the things we do to be attractive. There's a poisonous plant called "belladonna." The name is Italian, and means "beautiful lady." It's called that because in Renaissance Italy the fashion was for women with large, well-formed eyes. One of the effects of belladonna is that dilates the pupils. So women used it as a cosmetic: they would steep the leaves in water and apply drops of the resulting poison to their eyes in order to make themselves more attractive according to the standards of the day.

I rarely have my toenails painted. I'm not very good at it. I can paint other people's nails fine, but trying to paint my own toe and finger nails my hands shake so much I usually end up with it all over the place. Plus working at the library I don't have much opertunity to wear sandles or anything else that exposes the toes. (You ever drop a 20 pound art book on your foot? I have.)

So when I do have the money to afford a pedicure, I enjoy having my nails painted cause it makes me feel special. I don't have a lot of self esteem to speak of. I'm very fat and see myself as disgustingly ugly. I often do not understand what the men here see in me especially when they call me "cute." Having my nails painted makes me feel pretty for however long it lasts. It gives me a much needed self esteem boost.

Sadly, I'm too broke 99.9% of the time to afford a pedicure.

Yep. Because it jazzes them up, right?
And about the shaking hands, I have one word for you my dear:
GIRLFRIENDS! :evilha:

And on a non-related note, I think you are WAY too hard on yourself~we gotta work on that!
XOXO

Redmage - I'd hardly liken pedicures to using belladonna. 😛 And while I admit that I'd be less likely to paint my toenails during times that I think no one will see them, I also do it because it's cheery for me. I like looking down at my toes and seeing happy color staring back at me. Ever since I've been painting my toenails regularly, I've been able to detect a distinct dip in my mood whenever I look down at them and they're blank. 🙁

And TicklishLurker - steph's absolutely right. Find a girlfriend with whom you can trade pedicures, and don't be so hard on yourself. :twohugs:

Why? Because it makes me feel attractive. And it makes me feel a little more cheery.
And really, if it makes me feel good about myself, why not? Currently, my toenails are a really pretty lavender shimmer, and next week they'll be a bubblegum pink Lol.
And Izzy, yes, I do know what you mean about fleck polish. I have a bottle of it in red with silvery flecks that I adore.
It's all about feeling good, ladies 🙂

Well, they differ in degree, certainly. But I think the goals are much the same. I used that analogy because the answer to Metsfan's question (that women paint their toes to make them look prettier) seemed obvious (to me). But it wasn't obvious to Mets. So by way of emphasis I pointed out that people have done far stranger things with the same goal. I could have used the fact that women in Elizabethan times used arsenic to whiten their skin - that's even worse. 😉

Actually nail polish is a nice, benign way of enhancing pretty toes, so I'm all for sticking with it in favor of those older beauty aids.

And while I admit that I'd be less likely to paint my toenails during times that I think no one will see them, I also do it because it's cheery for me.
But why, do you suppose? Is it something inherent in coloring your nails, or is it because you know that it makes them prettier and more eye-catching? (I can confirm that it does do that, by the way. :wowzer: )

I know that I always feel better when I know I look good. But I know that the standards that I judge that by are highly subjective and culturally influenced. I'm OK with that - it gives me a lift no matter where it comes from. My central point is my opinion that nail polish (like most things we do to make ourselves look good) is part of a cultural matrix that tells us what "looking good" is supposed to look like. How well we mesh with that matrix is reflected in our moods as well as in the responses we get from those around us.

Thanks all~I think ticklishlurker seems like a lovely gal~you must learn to embrace your inner Goddess, hon! FWIW, a lOT of guys like femmes with "meat on their bones." :Kiss1: Remember what Mama said? "Beauty is only skin deep but ugly is to the bone."

And yep Izz, we know flecky nail polish~cool for festive events, parties, etc. I like to layer it over a darker color for a fun effect.

I wear pink nailbeds w/white tips and a thin line of gold along the nail bed. I've not seen anyone else do it and I always get a lot of nice comments.

XOXO

I didn't make my post to make this a "Let's try and repair Jami's destroyed self esteem" thread. I did it cause I wanted to make an honest answer to the original question. And the honest answer is when I have my toe nails painted it gives me a much needed ego boost.

I just don't want to be responsible for pulling a Hans Gruber on this thread, okay? Ya wanna do the above, make another thread for it. 😛

Hi TicklishLurker - I just looked up your picture and you are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too hard on yourself. I wouldn't list my full, real name, though. I have screennames for my screennames :dog:

But seriously, I would wager that most of the guys on this forum find you attractive. :cupid:

I will tell her again Red.

Jamie~anyone who can write like you do about us is amazing. Yanno what? Eleanor Roosevelt had a saying, "no one can make you feel inferior without your consent..." Pretty right on, yes? You can give in or you can say, "NO~I am of value!" I very much get a Goddess vibe from you~be lovely if you could see it in yourself babe...
XOXO

*sighs* I guess even though I keep begging you guys not to change the direction of this thread, I might as well change my name to Hans Gruber.

Talk about toe nail polish! Not me!

You know, when I first saw the title of this thread, I thought it was a question about why girlfriends sometimes like to paint their boyfriend's toenails.

i find it funny. of course, alot of women on here, like steph for example, want people to take notice to their feet with neat paint and detailed sculpts. however, i have spoken to women, who had very nice feet, who paint their nails but HATE it when guys (or anyone, for that matter) even look at their feet. they do it because a🙂 their finger nails are painted, so why not?, or b🙂 boredom. usually doesn't vary between those two. but, even still, i thank these women for painting their nails, putting on anklets and/or toe rings, and slipping on the sandals/flip-flops...cuz i always take notice!

Ya, some of us get it~"We want to play a game w/Sgt McClain." (heavy sighs) We have our work cut out for us, Goddesses~WHO'S IN?

XOXO
