Disclaimer: I'm NOT bashing porn because I've watched it way more times than I count, I know a few people on here who are porn creators, and whatever you consume is your business. I'm also NOT going to give the impression that I'm somehow above people for preferring erotica.
There are several differences between erotica and porn, but the most obvious one is how each are presented. Erotica is intended to create a sexually-stimulating response through things like metaphors, dialogue, sounds, atmosphere, setting, etc. Porn cuts to the chase by showing or describing a sexual-stimulating situation in graphic and explicit details. Erotica is usually presented as a imaginative and thematic literary, and the sexual act is often portrayed as part of the plot, rather than being the main focus. Porn can, but often doesn't, involve some level of fiction. If it does, the stories are paper thin, and if filmed, is often low-budget and relatively-easy to make for the sake of cost, and the sexual act is the main focus. This would explain why porn is often viewed as being for the masses, whereas erotica isn't, and I'm guessing the reason for that is most people haven't been exposed to erotica. Also, its ironic how the Web can provide us with so much information about any topic, and yet we continuously pigeonhole ourselves.
For anyone interested, one example is Phantom of the Opera, although it's often categorized as gothic horror and mystery. Its a period piece set in 1880's Paris about a young, beautiful, and aspiring Swedish soprano, Christine Daae, and how her angelic singing catches the attention of Erik (also known as the Phantom), a grotesque, lonely, and mentally-troubled outcast who lives within the catacombs beneath the Palais Garnier Opera House, plots against the stage crew and House's managers, and becomes infatuated with her. While pursuing Christine, Erik hides his deformity and status of being an outcast behind a mask and a suave and mysterious persona, only to be unmasked by her, to which she's then horrified by his deformity. If there was a scene involving a tickle session between the two before she unmasks him, you could believe the ecstasy she'd feel when being tickled by him. Thankfully, the 1910/1911 novel is in public domain, so anyone can create a version of it involving that. However, if you want to watch the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, get tickets and enjoy yourself. Because I aspire to be cultured, I have the theme song as my ringtone.
Because I've always been interested in the arts, and even thought about getting into filmmaking at one point, I'm open to creating a studio that specializes in erotic films and posting them on porn sites so the masses can become more familiar with erotica.
