Part of it, methinks has to do with ticklephiles without self-control. I wouldn't lable all tickle-lovers "perverts," seeing as the term pervert denotes a person who's sexual behavior is deemed abnormal and unacceptable.
Sure we're weirdoes. Proud to be one. :super_hap And that's just it. We're like what Tibbler said at first. We're deviant. Deviant is good. Deviant is cool. Deviant is what I am.
But I'm not a pervert. And by that I mean, I will not abuse my tickling quirk and indulge in it at another person's expense, in an immoral or dishonorable way. And if they still don't like it, regardless of that, then, well...screw them.
But, back to the point. I think a significant reason why the vanilla crowd who know about our fetish are so against it - or think that we're perverts - is because of the people who don't care for their fetish in the way that they should. As in, those first date scenarios where the guy is just out to tickle the crap out of the girl without enough consideration for her as a person. She finds out about it, she gets all freaked out, thinks it's just all a sexual desire, lables it a pervert, and then proceeds to tell all her friends about it and spreads the story of the "Attack of the Tickle Pervert," thus spreading it like a blight and tarnishing the true core of what our fetish really is...like all fetishes.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
Perhaps it's up to us to show that there's nothing at all perverted (in the sense of "unacceptable") about our tickling fetish? Maybe educate them? 😉
EDIT: But if we're just using the term loosely, then hell yeah, I'm a pervert!!!
