Oh yes, this is an ode to the often misunderstood limits for free bandwidth. It solves so many of our most pressing problems:
First of all, think of all the useless time we would spend in front of the monitor, waiting until the endless flow of video clips are downloading, if there was no bandwidth limit to the users. Imagine how much money would actually be going directly to the producers of material to produce more of their crap, instead of paying for valuable service & maintenance work at the internet providers. How much money we (the users) would be tempted to spend on that material, instead of buying faster broadband connections and new hardware.
And of course, it’s just a logical necessity that makes the providers charge the webmasters for every MB. After all, bandwidth is comparable to the flow of water or electricity through our meters, and we all know we have to pay for these amenities. There are malevolent rumors about data-packs not being equivalent to electricity or water because the internet providers don’t provide the data, just the transportation. Don’t believe them, these rumors are spread by disgruntled users who don’t really understand the internet.
Let us all be thankful for the fact that every user has to pay for:
a) the installation of phone or data cables
b) the hardware (computer, monitor, printer etc)
c) the software (windows / linux / mac programs, often included in hardware price)
d) the modem
e) the monthly provider bill, often with limited user bandwidth or per minute
f) the access to internet pages, as the webhosts get charged for their limited bandwidth as well
g) the actual cost of producing the material for downloads (e.g. tickle vid producers)
In addition to that, the webmasters have to pay for their server hardware and software, as well as an extra charge for their broadband connections.
So, in fact, we are glad to be stuck with sites like Yahoo-Groups, geocities, angelfire, and several porn webhosts. While we visit their sites, we should use our opportunity to watch their often highly sophisticated and tasteful ads and flash banners, thus aiding our limping economy.
All in all, the limits for internet bandwidth do us all a great service!
PS: Sorry for the rant, but I just HAD to vent my anger a bit...
